Practice makes...better !!!

What One Can Do On His Own...

Hello everybody, today I want to talk about things you can do on your own, I know, this comes a bit late when you think that holidays are nearly finished, never mind! You can use it next year!!!

First of all, the best thing is to practise in a large area: garden, beach, hockey/football pitch, field...
You can practise at home as well, but there may be some dangerous situations!!! And Mum and Dad don’t always appreciate to replace a window for the fourth time.

The first thing to practise, everyday, a hundred, even a thousand times a day is dribbling. The different techniques of controlling the ball with the stick!
You have to practise with and without moving, thus you gain confidence with your stick, especially controlling the ball without looking at the ball!!! Look at the article on PFH about it, it is a very good thing to do. The more you look up; the better it is for your team as you will spend more time looking for partners on the field rather than thinking of where your ball is and losing it stupidly by walking on it or worse by kicking it while running with it!!!

Therefore, you have to practise things such as driving the ball, either dribbling or not:
1. on the left;
2. in front of you;
3. on the right.
All this alternatively...not so difficult.

Other things to practise, still linked to looking up and "taking information" or "looking for options", to change directions quickly, place some cones/sticks/or else, to have a sort of opposition...
To know how to change directions is vital in a game, to go (round the) back, to go left and right, to move a defence and so on...

Other technical things to practise against a wall or with a friend, to strike a ball, with and without moving. To learn to strike from both feet!!! I personally use my "wrong" foot more than my left foot, but I feel more confident that way, I strike harder and that can be disturbing for opponents!!! (it’s true!!)

Another thing I love doing, it can be seen by some people as "merely a waste of time because it is just to show off", is to jungle with a ball, and try to use every side of your stick, still with or without moving!!!

Another great game (I like it) is to play tennis with a friend, but a very peculiar tennis, either with a tennis ball or a hockey one, take your sticks, jungle 3 times and pass it to you friend. You can play with two or three people, then it becomes a sort of "volley ball".

The next one is called then "M".

This is the basic one, there is a time limit, but I can’t remember what it is exactly...

Another one to do is...if you have two players:

Strike the ball, go round the cones, receive/control the ball, go round the cones, look up and strike the ball to pass it. Both can do it or one at a time.  Your trainer can also set up a 20 cones contest, about 1 yard between each of them or even less an you have to dribble as quick as possible.  There are a lot of things people can do on their own, with or without a friend. Here are some tips, nothing very clever or highly difficult but helpful in my opinion.

 Hope you will enjoy them!!!

 Jools

hockey drills
I like the ideas of the site but i cant find anything that shows a perfect diagram of hockey shots such as flick or a hit out.
The site is a good one for practices and one of a few.There are hardly any good field hockey sites as they are mostly ice hockey on the net
