During this last weekend, the local men¡¯s hockey teams, Rebels and Wasps hosted Bermuda¡¯s first indoor hockey tournament at the Bermuda Athletic Association Gymnasium on Saturday. At temperatures of 33¢ªC outside, the game of indoor does not seem to make any sense in a country like Bermuda, however, it allowed for a respite from the heat.
The tournament was organized by the Rebels F.H.C. club as a means of assessing the viability of the game as an alternate to the outdoor game that Bermuda now plays. Currently, Bermuda is one of the few countries in the Pan Am Hockey Federation without an artificial playing surface, and the sports club that the leagues were being played on was recently sold,
The day culminated with the two top outdoor teams meeting in the final, the League champions Chameleons and runners up Rebels. The Rebels struck early with a goal against the flow of play. The Chameleons hit back with two goals in quick succession through their experienced indoor players, mainly from the United Kingdom. However, on the day the Rebels were too strong defensively and capitalized using a strong passing game plan and were runaway winners tallying up a score line of 6-2.
The Chameleons, as the league champions, are going to represent the island at the Pan American Club Championships in Barbados in November, and the other clubs represented hope that this brand of field hockey will become a regular part of the league.
