ALYSON ANNAN.  Australia. Born: 6/12/1973, in Tolyatti, Russia.

Known as the ?sharpest shooter in international women?s hockey? and the ?best female hockey player in the world?, Alyson Annan first made history books at the 1998 Commonwealth Games when she became Australia's highest ever goal scorer with 110 goals.

With 192 caps, Annan has the highest number of international goals, 143.

Her credits include four Champions Trophy gold medals, two World Cup gold medals, two Olympic gold medals and one Commonwealth Games gold medal.

In addition to her contributions to the Australian team effort, Annan has earned numerous individual honors over the years. She was the top goal scorer at the 1999 Champions Trophy, as well as at the 1998 World Cup where she was selected as Player of the Tournament.  She was also the first-ever recipient of the International Hockey Federation?s Player of the Year Award in 1999.

Alyson was first selected in the Australian Team in June 1991 to play in a Test Series against Korea in Hobart and Melbourne. She was a member of the victorious NSW Arrows in the 1993, 1996 & 1998 Telstra Stix Series, National Hockey League and was also named 1996 & 1997 as Telstra Player of the year.

Its so good to find a fan that knows of her birth place, yes she was born in wentworthville, nsw,if only you all knew how many broken windows and sticks one had to go through but it was all worth while, even the headaches of travelling, which are missed so much, but the games truly made up for it.

She is indeed a great player-someone that plays with great skill, composure, and balance....but I think what makes her so special too is she has been apart of a team that has been a big part of her success-and together they have achieved alot!!!
But what about players from argentina!!!

I agree that Alyson deserves to be the best player but the last months we saw that the Argentina Hockey Team. So, we can also consider several great players such as Luciana Aymar, Cecilia Rognoni and Vanina Oneto. Come on people, nowadays Argentina is the number one.

Alyson Annan
Having watched Al play over a number of years I can say unbiasedly that she is the greatest women's player ever. 2nd on that list is Rechelle Hawkes, always in the right position at the right time. Annan is like Michael Jordan, so far ahead of the rest it's not funny. As a 15-year-old she was recording times for difficult drills that many international men struggle to match. My heartbeat quickens whenever she gets the ball and takes off! I just hope she's fit and plays in perth later this year at the World Cup.

I love Hockey and i play left wing. I play every Friday and i am also doing it for association sports on saturdays next year. I am a fast runner so my team members pass the ball to me and i sprint down to the circle and score. I havn't been caught yet! Anyway i am doing a profile on an Australian athlete and i love hockey so i chose you.
I hope to become a Telstra hockeyroo some day!
i just wanted to let you now you inspire me and hopefully i can meet you someday. if i work hard enough. I hope to see you soon playing hockey for Australia!!!!!!!

i come from scotland and even over here alyson is known as a great but her achievements hav not been fully rewarded. It is disapointing that such a talent has not been fully recognised world wide. i believe that hockey is a sport that should be watched by the millions that tune into football and athletics and stars like alyson make it worth while. alyson really is an inspiration and idol to many young players in scotland and we build ourselves on the belief that one day we will be up there achieving the highest level

Surely it's about time the England team climbed down from the pedestal they have put themselves upon and started to learn a little humility in the face of the greats such as Nederlands, Argentina and particularly, Australia? It's now becoming a well known fact that the England squad, far from 'rocking', are nothing but irritating with their, frankly, disgusting attitude to those against whom they compete. The exception would be Jane, but then Sixsmith is an exception on all scores....the only truly 'international' player to emerge from England in recent times.
It is an insult to players such as Alyson to have such utter drivel as you wrote posted on their commentary......

you read me wrong blah...
I wasn't putting anyone down because I don't reckon they're as good...I was addressing the 'attitude' of the side and their supporters which is nothing less than tiresome at the best of times. From where I stand, England aren't 'another' country...I have dual nationality, one of which happens to be English. Hence, the attitude of self-importance isn't just one I don't agree with, it's one I find downright embarrassing. You're right Blah, it IS just a game and it IS there to provide fun....it would be nice, however, if 'my' country adhered to this ethos and 'played nicely' for a change.
And, hey, I don't take anything too seriously, just don't like it when people are disrespectful....there's no need for it.

NEW HOCKEYROO #1 PLAYER...
If you all watched the Champions Trophie over the last few weeks im sure ou all would have seen the amazing skill and composure of Hockeyroo Katie Allen... having played over 140 international games i believe she has become the backbone of the Hockeyroos... her fearless agression is what the team lacks and withour her strength on the backline there is no way they would have gotten the gold.... Katie you rock! i never forget watching you all those years ago training down at hawthorn..i picked you out then...knew you would be a star!! Take care of that black eye babes!! hehe xxx

Alyson Annan
The first time I ever saw Alyson was the Sydney Olympic games when I decided to tape the hockeyroos to help give me ideas to improve my game. I never knew anything about her until watching her play against England in the first match and couldn't believe the amount of speed, skill, and awareness she possessed. Some of the things she did I never knew you could do and I can honestly say she changed the way I approached the game. As a coach aswell I looked to pass on some of her skills plus certain strategies the hockeyroos used. Since I got glued watching her and the team dominated games I did managed to pick up one key fault that Alyson could improve on and that was her tackle from in front of the player. Her tackle or stealing from behind was very effective but got flat footed alot from in front of the player. A lot of the time it didn't matter as she had enough speed to cover her mistake and the strength of the hockeryroos backline rarely let any through anyway. It was a shame I didn't get to see any more of her play, now assistant coach at the dutch camp I don't think she'll make it back to the intenational side. Thanks for the memories!

Rude !! I don't think so. Shy maybe. I have known her since she was 10 and have never ever known her to be rude. She is a person who keeps to herself and regards family and friends highly!!. Maybe you were not in either category, hence she had no time for you, which gave you the opinion she was rude! I find it disappointing that all you can say about this article and her achievements is that YOU thought she was rude. Congratulations on jumping on a ban wagon of criticising people when they achieve! shame on you

What the ?
You should all take a moment to look at yourselves here. Firstly, you should all maybe just look to praising the girl that this page represents, she is an absolute gem of a girl. Secondly, you should all be ashamed of yourselves for trying to better one another by using the rankings of your national teams to state how great you are on the back of their success. As a brit who has just witnessed the beginning of a new era for the mens national side here, i hold my breath in hope that they can get back to the ranking that they deserve to be at. As a neutral, i see the likes of Australia as an awesome force (currently) - just don't assume that these guys will be at the top of the pack forever though Ozzie friends cos the other nations are catching you up big style. My Money is on South Africa to come and start kicking international hockey butt soon now that the awesome skills and power of the native african players has now been unleashed! The girls look quite handy too!

For the record, anyone care if i state the best guys in world hockey in my opinion are Greg Nicol & Justin King of South Africa, Mark Pearn and Simon Mason of GB, and the ladies other than the gorgeous HockeyRoos, Denise Marsden Smith & Kate Walsh, go girl!!!!! XXXX ;) PS. Kate Walsh is the fittest woman i have ever seen!

Annan should be Australia's next Head Coach
It is interesting to see how the Hockeyroos have stumbled since Mr Bell encouraged Alyson Annan to retire. The matter was so badly handled by Hockey Australia. With the failure of the Hockeyroos at the Olympic's it is time for Australia to try and recruit Annan to its national coaching staff. This outstanding player has already demonstrated her coaching prowess with the Dutch. The impact of linking Annan into the Hockeyroo coaching network would have an immeasurable impact upon the team.

Does Alyson Annan ever read this page? If so I have a few comments:
Firstly, the question as to who is the greatest player in the world is subjective - there is no definitive answer. However, everyone who has commented on this website must agree that Alyson Annan is unique and it's unlikely we'll see a player with her all round ability again. Secondly, Alyson you retired too early. I suppose I say that out of disappointment. I missed you in the World Cup in Ireland in '94 and thought I would have the opportunity to see you in Athens only to find that you had retired from international hockey. People like you inspire others to become like you so it's important that you hang around and play for as long as possible - see Suzie L's comments above. Finally even though I stated there's no definitive answer I do believe that you are the greatest player ever - Reychelle Hawkes said it recently and Rick Charlesworth thinks so and you know he's never wrong! The only words suitable to describe Alyson are LEGEND, AMAZING and FANTASTIC!! However, i must add, my other hockey heroines are mijntje donners of the netherlands, and kate walsh (my all time fave and idol) of england and GB. Not only is Kate a great player, infact one of englands only current worldclass players, but she is also amazingly good looking, definitly the most stunning of the current hockey internationals!! Not to mention a first class captain!

Al nowadays
Hi to all,
I've been reading your postings, and it seems that some people don't exactly know what Al is doing nowadays. Last season (2003-2004) she played her last game for Klein Zwitserland, a Dutch club in the Hague. They perform in the highest league, now running for the play-offs in May. Alyson became coach of this squad, and is doing very well. She stopped playing herself, which was a pity since she attributed a lot to this team (2x winner of best player competition in Holland, and topscorer). Maybe she learned a lot from Rick as far as coaching is concerned because it is getting better every week. Also, during the Olympics in Athens, she was trainer of Dutch national team, who became second. Hope to have informed you enough, keep the postings up, it's nice for us to read how Aussies think about her!
