Rechelle Hawkes (AUS) will be the first athletes’ representative to sit on the Executive Board of the International Hockey Federation (FIH).
The new Executive Board position reinforces the FIH’s commitment to listen to the athletes at decision-making level. The FIH recognised the need for athlete’s input four years ago with the construction of the Athlete’s Panel, comprising former international-level hockey players.
Rechelle has a long history of involvement in hockey and related occupations. Starting hockey at her local club at the age of six, she was first selected for the Australian team in 1985. She has had an outstanding career, and now ranks in the history books as the most successful female hockey player ever, after winning her third Olympic Gold at the Sydney Games.
Rechelle was selected for one of sports highest honours in speaking the athlete’s oath at the Opening Ceremony of the 2000 Olympics.
During her hockey career, she has found time to complete two university degrees, in Teaching Physical Education and Marketing. She has coached extensively and been a proactive ambassador for hockey.
President Els van Breda Vriesman extended, “a warm welcome to Rechelle on behalf of the Executive Board. The FIH is most grateful that current top-level athletes, such as Rechelle and the other members of the Athletes Panel, are willing to pass on to the FIH the benefits of their experience.’’
