World and Olympic list suspended: The ?World and Olympic? umpiring status has been suspended as a first step in a wholesale review of the umpire?s grading process.
The Umpiring Committee, in its continuing aim to improve international umpiring, is to make an analysis of how umpires reach the World and Olympic list.
All the current World and Olympic umpires will remain as Grade I and will continue to be appointed as their ability indicates.
Its is planned for the review to be completed within 12 months.
Developing women umpires.
The revised Handbook for International Umpires has been published and will shortly be sent to all international umpires and national associations besides being put on the new FIH web-site.
The book contains hints and guidance on tournament preparation, umpiring skills, fitness, diet and travel.
Second Umpire?s Managers Seminar
The second Umpire?s Managers Seminar was held over three days in Manchester (England), the city staging next year?s Commonwealth Games, and was attended by 37 people from 19 countries, representing all five continents. It has been three years since the first seminar - at Paris - and it was obvious much had changed since then.
The speakers were: Gavin Featherstone on video coaching of umpires; David Whittle, the Great Britain team manager; Dr Brian Hemmings, a sports psychologist, on Assertive Management Skills; Evlyn Raistrick and Wiert Doyer on the balancing act between Tournament Directors and Umpires Managers; Paul Lissek, the former German coach now with Malaysia; Rene Cohen, a World Cup and Olympic umpire on the ?angry player?; Richard Ford on pushing the potential of the umpire; and Graham Nash, the FIH Umpiring Committee chair on the assessment and up-grading process. The seminar, organised by Graham Nash, finished with a lively Open Forum.

Having watched a lot of international hockey in 2000, it astonishes me that the quality of women's umpiring is so poor. Some of the umpires at the Olympics would not get a run in the local Sydney competition. It's time FIH stopped appointing them on a political basis (ie 2 from this weak hockey nation, 1 from that poor Asian country, another 2 from this average standard country) and started appointing the best regardless of origin. The limit of 2 per country at a World Cup or Olympics can only lower standards - FIH doesn't say only 2 teams from Europe can attend the Olympics or World Cup. Also, it strikes me that many of the 'top' women umpires are unable to relate to players. When questioned about a poor decision they puff their chests out, look down their noses at the player and then ignore them. Players must have confidence that the umpires are human and able. Most failed this test at Amstelveen and Sydney. Perhaps paying them a lot more and treating them as members of the FIH family, rather than lepers the executive must unfortunately deal with, would be a start. Then rope in the best 3 recently retired umpires to coach the upcoming ones.
Wait a minute ! I've got another idea !
How about FIH simply appoints the best - men or women - to each tournament. That would reveal a lot about the state of women's umpiring - and put FIH to shame. Can't have that, now, can we ? Garcon, another campari please !

Re: Fly....
First of all, it is great that FIH is going to suspend the lists... hopefully people will have to work for the appointments...
Also, what is wrong with having men officiate womens games, they do it in Canada... look at the last CIAU championship...
but fly.... respect is a two way street it is not always a simple thing to relate to a person who is in the heat of competition and questioning calls... face it, most of the time when someone wants to know about a call they do not walk up to the official and say.. "excuse me but could you please be so kind as to...." no...dear fly they start out with "what the %^&&^%#( kind of call was that"... perhaps players too need to learn to respect.
As for umpires managers.. well... I am still trying to figure out what use they are aside from hanging about the fields and organizing social sessions. Here in Canada we just like to spend money sending the small number of umpire's managers (two i believe) that we have from tournament to tournament.. in fact we in Canada are attempting to give a lesson in redundancy by having both an umpire's manager and a senior umpire... pretty good huh??? must mean that the association has lotsa $$$$

Umpires' Manager
While I would agree with Fly and Respect with various points, I must remark about Umpires' Manager.Umpires looking to be upgraded? Who is going to be taking care of them? Who is going to take me after a game and tell me "this is what you need to work on.....need to be ahead of play more....etc." Who guides me to try and become a better umpire or an umpire up to the mark that we can umpire Australian games? Umpiring is a thankless job, I do it voluntarily so why should any players or coaches for that part disrespect me? Know what.......let the coaches and players do the games, maybe then they will respect me.Once I have been trying to be fair and consistent, no one should abuse me.

Women Umps
What a mess they made of the CWG final.
A stroke was negated for India saying time wasting though the ump never blew for taking the stroke.
Better not to talk about the Golden Goal after extended PC.
