Scotland threw away a two-goal lead to lose 4-2 to France in Leipzig and be relegated from the European Nations Championship.

The defeat consigned the Scots to tomorrow's seventh place play-off but also confirmed a finish in the bottom two, denying them a spot in next year's World Cup qualifier and dropping them into the second tier competition in two year's time.

It was a long way to fall from the euphoria of the 4-2 victory over England in the group stages and especially hard to take after the position they had got themselves in after 44 minutes.

Mark Ralph put Scotland ahead in the fifth minute when he followed in his own penalty corner strike to put away the rebound.

His brother David doubled the lead after half-time but less than a minute later Frederic Soyez pulled one back from a penalty corner.

Stephane Jaquet equalised in the 56th minute before Soyez (58) and Alexis Collon (63) snatched victory.

Sad loss v France
Just goes to show that there are other teams to beat apart from England. We Scots need to get away from the 1297 and 1314 mentality.

Well Done Antiquarian
As stated on other posts a win against England is worthless if not backed up by consistent performances.

I bet the Scots are now singing Englans praises at least we have kept some players hopes of playing Beijing alive!!

Bottle Bank
I believe that the bottle that was last lost by Grange at the end of last season as been found by the guys from Grange and past on safely to the Dutch Mens Hockey team, they told Mr Dix-Perkins that the bottle would definately be in safe hands and appreciated the mighty stag in finding 'their' botlle and passing it onto them. They re assured the chaps that they would not lose their bottle in Leipzig.
To the amazement of everyone in Scottish hockey on sunday, holland have well and truely lost their own bottle and now are in seek of some help in locating theirs, apparently they are in no rush they have 4 years........

Not a fan of the excuses ?gamesmanship? what does that mean? Belgians rolling around like they?ve been stricken with the plague, so what! If they?re on the ground they don?t have the ball, the idea is not to get involved, remain disciplined and if required, fall about as well. As long as we grind out the point required to progress I?d wear a dress and you could call me Nancy, who cares? Not satisfied with the Belgian debacle, we?re then 2 nil up on the French and chuck it, what?s the story? Am I in the minority or should we not have defence at the forefront of our minds in that situation and be focused on running down the clock with simple ball retention, defending on the halfway line and employing some ?gamesmanship? of our own.

I?ve been there myself and with the exception of certain individuals I regard the present national side as superior to the one I played in and I'm sure the lads are gutted to have had it in their grasp only to through it away. I also don't have the answers for the inconsitant perfomances, if i did I'd let you know. However I do want to know why after 5 years of professional coaching, full time institute athletes and league manipulation we find ourselves in the same situation with nothing more than a meaningless victory against a poor England side to dine out on.
