New Delhi: Piqued with the Indian Hockey Federation's (IHF) ways of picking the coach for the national squad, former Olympic captain and one of the best defenders of his era Pargat Singh said the job should be left to a panel comprising former Olympians.

''IHF needs to stop experimenting with the coach's post and should accept the fact that they have failed. Rather, they should form a former Olympians' panel and entrust the job of picking the coach to the panel,'' he told UNI.

Criticising the IHF for its chopping and dropping excercise, Pargat said, ''I am not in favour of frequent change of the coaches. I think a coach needs to settle down a bit before implementing his plans. It can't happen overnight and he should be given a fixed tenure. Otherwise no coach can deliver the goods with the axe hanging over his head. This is an unhealthy practice.'' ''IHF has burnt its finger time and again while picking the coach. The experiment with foreign coach also proved a failure.

I think they should leave it to the former Olympians who still command respect and can do the job,'' he explained.

Pargat also had a word of advice for the national coach.

''A coach should concentrate on his job and avoid giving statements to media in between the tournaments,'' said the former player who himself had a short tenure as a coach of the national side.

He also refused to single out IHF President K P S Gill for the decline of Indian hockey.

''It is not any individual, but the whole institution of IHF which is responsible for the mess in which Indian hockey finds itself'' the ace defender said.

He said he had no expectations from the controversy-ridden IHF and urged all the former players to come forward and chip in to help Indian hockey regain its lost status.

''I don't have the panacea which can cure the ailment but I feel former players can't wash their hand soff the issue. We all have to come forward and boost the game at the grass-root level. Former players should approach the corporate houses to convince them about sponsoring the game at different levels. The base of the game is shrinking every day and it would be too late if we don't address the issue right now,'' he added.

well even if there is any pool of former olympians,I dont think that will solve the problem. They will be given a name of the coach by Gill and Jyotikumaran and they will have to agree on that name.there is only one solution to all the ills of indian hockey, remove gill and jyotikumaran.

just a thought...
how about stop looking back into the past and 'old olympians' who have their own prejudices and bias and who will have no idea who the best coach is and start looking towards getting a coach who can modify indias game in line with the australian and europeans in order to actually compete with these teams

Coach
I personally recomend Rajinder singh Senior as Coach of the indian hockey team i think it was all politics when he was taken off from his job before the athens olympics, we should go and look at his past performence so far he did for the team.

rebuild the team. Take some players from the junior team and some new faces.
Old famous stars have no interest in playing. They just sit on the benches and think abaout the interviews and statements and how much they will be paid if they are signed for an advertisement.
Get some new motivating players

I agree with Pargat Singh. However, the pool of former Olympians should be allowed to do their job properly and select the best coach....and also the best possible players in the country to actually play in the team.

NEW COACH
FIRST THROW OUT GILL AND JOTHI.

NEXT BRING IN RIC CHARLESWORTH ON HIS TERMS AS A PROFESSIONAL. I BELEIVE OUR NATIONAL GAME CAN AFFORD TO PAY FOR HIS PROFESSIONAL SERVICES. NEEEDLESS TO SAY HE WILL BE RESULT ORIENTED AND BOUND BY THE CONTRACT WHICH SHOULD TIE UP WITH HIS PAY PACKET.

CORPORATES WILL DEFINITELY CHIP IN AS AND WHEN THIS HAPPENS.

WELL QUITE A FEW FORMER PLAYERS ARE TRYING TO COACH AT THE GRASS ROOTS.

ASHISH BALLAL AND DHANRAJ PILLAY TAKE THE LEAD IN THIS DIRECTION WITH THEIR OWN ACADEMIES AT BANGALORE AND MUMBAI COACHING ABOUT 70 TO 80 BOYS TOTALLY FREE OF COST. I CAN THINK OF TOIBA SINGH IN THE NORTH EAS, PARGAT HIMSELF AND A FEW OTHERS.

re
Guys.....i think it's high time we forget that the world has only 2 countries in it.......we have to look beyond just the stupid india vs Pak talk.........we have to improve our performances and not just rely on victories over our neighbour........Pak has improved leaps and bounds, has trophies to show over the last decade, while we have only occasional victories to boast of!......it's time we grow up, realise that the hockey world has left us far behind and before it's all over, pull up our socks and try to compete with the rest of the world and not only Pak!! There is no point in standing last but still grinning that we beaten pakistan because that is pointless. We cannot continue to be the laughing stock of the rest of the hockey world.
