Scotland's senior men have pulled off a great win over the auld enemy in the second match of their European Championships campaign. A 4-2 win over England has opened up Group A and given the Scots a fighting chance of making the semi finals.

England opened the scoring early through a Matt Daly drag flick in the fifth minute from the second of two penalty corners awarded to the English side. Scotland had a number of chances, including a penalty corner which the usually infallible Mark Ralph was unable to lift, but Kelburne's Johnny Christie was ready and waiting to open the scoring for Scotland pouncing on a deflection in the 20th minute.

Neither side was able to add to their tally for the remainder of the first half despite some opportunities at both ends. Scotland's keeper Ali McGregor (Aberdeen Asset Management) was at the top of his game preventing England from going into the break with any advantage.

England came out fighting and had the advantage over Scotland, including a one man advantage when Dougie Simpson was sent off. But it was Scotland who seized the initiative with a fantastic Argentinean backhand from Loughborough's David Ralph 16 minutes into the second half. Dougie Simpson made up for his yellow card by adding a third goal for the Scots three minutes later with a great solo effort.

In the 58th minute Johnny Christie claimed his second goal and the Scots lead stretched to 4-1 but England didn't take defeat lying down securing a penalty stroke in the 69th minute which captain Brett Garrard converted. But it was too little too late for the English squad and Scotland took the win 4-2.

This is the second time that Scotland has beaten neighbours England in a European Championships, a 2-1 win in Barcelona last time out was a surprise to many but that is surely eclipsed by this latest result.

Speaking from Leipzig, Performance Manager Brent Deans was clearly delighted with the Scottish Institute of Sport supported squad's performance but is realistic about what lies ahead; "This was a great game and the boys played really well. Niall Stott and Mike Leonard were particularly good tonight and Ali McGregor pulled off some great saves. We had a shaky start but thoroughly deserved the win. Now we need one point from our next game to reach the semis."

The next match for the Scots is a crucial one against Belgium who lost 4-1 to Germany tonight (Tuesday) and only managed a 1-1 draw with England. However, the Belgians have been playing some very good hockey and this will be a really tough match for the Scots with both teams eager to secure a semi final berth. Germany has already qualified.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) is a rest day in the competition and Scotland v Belgium is first up at 10.45 local time on Thursday 1 September.

This result is proof that the GB team should not consist of mainly English players. Any observer would expect the England side to demolish Scotland...purely on the basis that they contain a larger no. of GB players. The reality is that Scotland and Wales are capable of beating opposition that England have been unable to.

There is no doubt that the Enland team has extreemly talented players, but for some reason they dont perform. Why? .....arrogance? lack of direction? over coached? no passion? who knows.....its probably a combination. one thing is for sure, Scotland kicked butt!!

As a big Hockey fan I took the opportunity to watch the Celtic cup that we hosted this year, and I must say that the Scottish team and Welsh team (Who beat us very narrowly) have players with ability and passion!! What GB would give to have 16 players at an olympic games that could play with that!

I think the GB side should contain a handfull of players from Eng, Sco and Wales. Someone has to put an end to englands domination of an underperfoming GB side

What more did you expect. England have a bunch of non hoppers with a management team to match. I have a bet that england will finish last in yet another tournament and know they won't dissapoint me. The fact is apart from one player Ben Hawes the rest wouldn't make the reserve teams in the top 12 world ranked teams which a number of players left behind in england would. Open you eyes Jason Lee and start selecting them otherwise your job will become vacant sooner than you think.

I’m afraid this could spell the end for Lisa “Scot” Lee, the former member of popular beat combo Steps was an extremely risky appointment by the English Hockey Association, however, few could have envisioned the “Tragedy” too beset both GB and England since she took up the reins. It’s abundantly clear that the intricate dance moves brought from hits such as “Stomp” and “Last thing on my mind” have simply not translated into the patterns of play Ms Lee had hoped for and her players seem devoid of the rhythm required to cut it at the highest level. Unfortunately if Ms Lee is unable to ensure her charges get it together for their next fixture against the mighty Bosch then they could concede as many as ”5,6,7,8”. It maybe that the middle of a tournament isn’t the best time to cut the coach adrift, as sometimes it’s a case of “Better the Devil you know”. However if the result goes the way the hockey world expects then this will set of a “Chain Reaction” with only one outcome. Therefore Ms Lee would perhaps be better advised to cut her loses and the whole sorry debacle can be “Better Best Forgotten”

English Hockey R.I.P.
I thought when English Hockey went bust and we lost our (admittedly ill conceived) National Stadium to a bunch of Kev-ballers things couldn't sink any lower - WRONG! English hockey has stooped to a new and embarrassing low and with no possible solution looking likely the future looks bleak.

At least we get automatic entry to the London Olympics as hosts but then Greece were excluded from Athens on the basis that they were not good enough to compete at that level - at this rate, it could happen to us!

But English hockey has reached a new low, time for a few head to roll starting with Jason "no idea" Lee and Brett "past it" Garrard. The English hockey players pride is being destroyed.

Fact !
Scotland beating England is not a flash in the pan ,as Scots excel at indoor hockey and have carried this to playing on astro.

Scotland have every right to press for the right of Scottish players being selected for GB , as proposed by some that the English team should represent GB.

Whilst agreed that youth is the way forward I think combining them with the veteran 100 cappers of Leonard, Dunlop, Ralph & Marwaha is one of the reasons why these youngsters are flourishing.

Although we lost 2 -1 to belgium today, they all the Belgian players & supporters maintained we were a better team than the english rabble they played a couple of days ago.

Got to go as I am hopefully about to witness Germany thashing the auld enemy by double figures.

I think its good for british hockey. If the Scots continue their form, perhaps this could improve the GB level for the next olympics. That's assuming the GB programme will allow the squad sufficient time to fully prepare.

Come forth all ye Wayne Rooneys with Hockey sticks and save us
I am surprised how few younger players are involved for England. Belgium had two players who played in the U18 Euros in July and I see Scotland have an 18 year old and Germany a 19 year old. And these are just from the few games i have seen.

Where are the likes of Cheesman, S Mantell, Lane etc from the U21s. Maybe they did underperform at the Junior World Cup only finishing 9th, but there must be some players in the squad that we could look to rather than keep average mid to late 20s players in for the time being until we deem the younger ones old enough.

Take Wayne Rooney for example, when he was first selected for the England team he probably wasn't quite good enough. However, the England Football management team recognised that this could be different very soon and they took a chance. This chance didn't turn out too bad either, look at the lad now.

The point I am making is that when people talk about fresh faces there are still some that are keep in and do not deserve their place. And from what I have seen it's the new faces and younger players that have performed best such as:

West, Middleton, Daly, Marsden, Clarke

These should be the foundation of the next squads and youth should be blooded in order for us to be preparing the squads for Beijing 2008 and London 2012 and the world cups now, rather than a year before they start.

Also special mention to Jon Ebsworth. In the games aired live on Eurosport he has performed very well. Basically, he did his job and kept the ball out on every possible occasion he could.

as someone that has played with and against jon, it is so nice to see that someone who has always been there or there abouts doing so well. It would be lovely to have the opportunity at a tournament to say that the keeper copuldn't be that good because we didnt see him! Unfortunately we have seen jon a lot, and what we have seen has been brilliant, by far our number one right now.

The save he made off of Witthaus today, diving to his left was, i feel, underestimated by the commentators.

Well done also to Benny M, awesome mate, lets just hope that you stay in Spain , because whatever it has done to you has been brilliant, and im sure they have a more than ample selection of the female variety, i just hope that you didnt take your 205 with you, probably not the best pulling machine!

I can't agree that he played well against Germany, he had very little to do, when he was called upon with 2 minutes to go he came out and laydown far to early making it far too easy for the German to chip the ball over his static length.

Basics, I teach keeper that dropping is tha last option and you should stay on your feet as long as possible, stay up and mobile.

Scottish Olympic Aspirations
It's fantastic the short memories of some and how a win over the 'auld enemy' provokes such comments.
Sure the Scots have done well, I hope they stay in the A-division and England as well. However, the reality is this. Because Scotland and Wales would not sign up to a wholesale GB programme and wanted to retain their precious national identity England had to be nominated as the GB 'flag carrier' as the highest ranked team. If they get relegated then they are in the B division in 2007, currently the teams for the Olympic qualifier from Europe will be drawn from the A division of the Euro Cup in 2007. It doesn't take Einstein to see that by not prioritising the Olympics and GB and it's importance how good the Scots players are and how many should force their way into a GB team is irrellevant as Beijing is not an option!!
Isn't it interesting that beating England has always been so important, when it happens the Englash are slated and told they should be replaced at GB level, unfortunately by beating them they have destroyed their own chances of competing as GB. That's ok though as playing for Scotland was always more important than GB anyway.
Hmmm ...

Watching the Germany v Spain Semi-Final:

Spot the 'ready' position of the Spanish GK on pcs.Focus on his right arm and stick position. Its pointing at the skies*(b/w 12 and 1pm if it was a clock) and his arm is almost in line with his shoulderblade. In that position he is gonna struggle to cover low flick to his right hand side.Love it,drag flick bottow left.Germans scored bottom left low corner.

I see we have a few gk experts(I'm not one of them might i add).Pls watch out for this 2moro(assuming ur watching the final) and post a comment in reply.

To Suni: I was not blaming the players for underperforming at the JWC. Actually I was trying to say that there probably are some good enough players that were in that squad. I was trying to back my suggestions of selecting youth if it is good enough as some may come out and say our youth is not good enough because of that final placing.

And To 24 year old: Sorry, what I meant is that if there are young players who have great potential why not put them in at an early age. I meant young now, so that by the time the Olympics etc come around they should have developed into good internationals. I wouldn't like to see a team of U21s oh no! I meant that it doesnt seem the case that we ever take a chance on raw young talent at an early age. If there are any who are capable that is!

You ask that the england coach takes a chance on youngster, "don't be silly" he doesn't do it with recognised talent who perform weekly in the national league, J Lee picks yes men who appear to be his lough uni mates.

The team in Leipzig were an embarrisment to english hockey losing 3 games drawing 1 & winning 1 the situation on selection won't change whilst the cuurent coach adopts this arrogant and bias approach to selection.

If coach Lee NOW sincerely believes the squad of players he took to the europeans was the best available, he should do the honorable thing and resign as 10's of thousands who play & coach hockey at all levels in england know defferently because they had to endure this appalling debarcle and the humiliation.

Surely balance is the way to go, is cordon really better than todd? wyatt should still be playing as should wallis and hall, its is a joke that the these players who would have destroyed scotland have been treated so badly.

The England rugby team had severall mid thirties players, not because they were 30 because they were the best, if Lee took his blinkers off he would pick the best players from a a pool of around 35 players, some who are full time hockey players, some who are part time.
