its worrying that we had to come from behind to get results in the two games. Doesn't bode too well for Rome. Any thoughts?

Not worrying
Practice game, close to tournament, likely to play Italians in the crossover matches or final which determines whether we qualify for next tournament, video cameras rolling - no one was showing off any tricks

East European opposition ?
What would worry me is that our opponents in the group games are Belarus, Wales & Russia.
Have we had any practice matches against these types of sides all summer ?
That could be the downfall.
Its all very well playing against predictable West European sides like Scotland, Germany, Belgium, France & Italy.
We will not be used to playing against solid defensive teams who have honed their defensive skills on Indoor courts.
Hope we are prepared for the group matches & are not just lining up our opponents in the final!

JJ was not available this year due to studying so Wat's comments about J Jermyn do not add up - so your argument IS WRONG. Agree he would be in the team if he were available - he was class this year for us.
Find it odd that you are advocating that Butler, a guy who scored 5 goals (I think) in the last two games should not be in the team!! You must be another ignorant CI man.

The comments above from Wat show how childish some contributotrs can be,79 caps,45 goals(most goals ever,so far for an Irish player) do mean something,In many observers eyes one of the best players ever to play for Ireland.Whilst in Belgium was chosen 3 years in a row on Belgiums League team and in Top Three Players for their Golden Stick award.Any team would be proud to have him.

You said ask anyone who isn't in the club, well I'm not and they are a great bunch of lads off the pitch, who cares what they are like on the pitch they are great to watch and get the results. Maybe they have kicked your ass a few times and you don't like it . Why would Butler go back if they are a bunch of thugs? Wise up!

Yeah before you get on the bannnwagon where have all his mighty U/18's progeessed to, not U/21's as there is no team anymore because thay can't compete MMMMMM good development. As a female supporter of Hockey in Leinster who plays with Loreto, I'm seriously concerned about the bad mouthing of a fellow Leinster team. I have watched many mens matches in the past and have to say that I don't think Glenanne are any better or worse than other Leinster teams. It strikes me that this is the type of arrogant snobby attitude that comes from people who (a) are peeved because Glenanne are a better team and will be a force to be reckoned with this year and (b) generally will look down on a team because they are based in Tallaght. This is the type of childish, snobbish behaviour that hockey could do without. We are trying to encourage the sport in non-traditional areas and this is the type of attitude that will always stop young people from Clondalkin, Tallaght, Ballymun etc... participating in our wonderful sport.

Ask Stephen Butler and Graham Shaw why are they joining Glenanne?? Obviously 2 of the best players in the country seeing how they have been picked to play for Ireland over 75 and 59 times respectfully, come on its just typical putter downers that hang around this website. Always bad mouthing everything in Irish Hockey no matter what the general opinion, get up with the times, Glenanne play hockey - hard and strong just like Garvey used to do in the 90's - dominate teams physically and mentality. Is hockey meant to be played like friendlies, not these days, ask all of the Division 1 teams across the country who have trained for up to 6 weeks pre-season , 2 to 3 times a week - come on this is the real deal and if you think any of teams don't want to win, then think again sonny boy

Well Stephen Butler and Graham Shaw have both rejoined! ... and I believe that there has also been an influx of some young underage players... mmmmmh where does that put your theory. I'd say most players in Ireland would be happy to join such a successful club only they probably wouldn't get their place on the first team

Spot On ANon
I think this last post by Anon sums it up sheer brute force and intimidation do not make a team to admire. breaking down play abusing all around including officials and a purely cycnical approach to the game are disgusting.
The great shame is they have lots of skill and ability and don't need to resort to some of the stuff they get up to.
Perhaps someone could justify their behaviour at last seasons cup final as a starting point. If that can be defended as acceptable then there is no future for sport.

Guys dry your eyes, you sound like little babies wanting their nappy changing!
You would swear Glenanne are the only team ever to play physically, they play with pure emotion and is it wrong to want to win everytime - see this is why they beat you year in and year out, if crying about it on this website makes you feel better - then go for it.
Good man Cork, you boys down there enjoy the physical aspect of the game and there were three entertaining games between Harlequins and Glenanne last year. Better team won in the playoffs so fair paly.
Anyway best of luck to everybody starting their League Campaigns this weekend, and to Anon and Santa Claus, you make sure your skirts are ironed and your pom-poms are fluffed when you are cheering on your teams tomorrow

Me been a young Glenanne player have a lot of respect for our senior players. They show me that a person like me can play a sport at a very high level. We have 3 Irish internationals(Stephen Butler, Graham Shaw, Joe Brennan) and many interprovincial players. Thugs they are not. I played against thugs before, they were called Smithfield. Now they are thugs. I never seen any of our senior players play like they did! Ask anyone who has played against them!

Glenanne references
Having played rugby and other sports to a reasonably high level, I took up hockey about 10 years ago. To be honest , my perception was that this game was being played by the 'debating team' types (no offence intended if you were on a debating team). Thankfully I was wrong, I've never played higher than division 3 but year in and year out I enjoy some hard, tough, physical games against guys who I'm happy to have pints with any time. I wouldn't want it any other way, if you want a true non contact sport then it's time to pack it all in for the links.
I have seen Glenanne's Senior team play 6/7 times in the last couple of years and the players are a credit to this sport and their club. If we want to continue to grow this sport and expand it into areas where we can get some real talent, it has to be played by real people. Not by the 'Dort Speak' types who whimper when their thong gets caught up their backsides !
In fact, some of the previous comments would almost make me join Glenanne (if they have room for an old stager on their 3rd xi)
Let the begrudgers wipe their crocodile tears on the property pages of the 'Oirish Toimes' and let talent, drive, ambition and the will to win thrive.

found out
To call us Glen boys thugs is idiotic and shows everyone reading the forum what fools these people leaving such msgs are. Bullying tactics dont work at senior level. Thats why umpires are there, to prevent that. Any team trying to play like thugs would soon be found out as they would have too many red and yellow cards and suspensions to be really competitve and would end up relegated after a few seasons (Wimbledon FC anybody?). Glenanne have been top of the Leinster league now for over ten years. You dont hold a position like that for ten years and fill international places with record breaking players without having high levels of skill ingrained thoughout the club. "Anon" and "santa clause" are obviously inbred chinless left kicking wonders from Dublin Fooor still being breast fed by their mothers, and who are better players in their own heads than reality. My advice to you is to eat some red meat and go training.

Fitzpatrick is a well respected underage school's coach. A thug would not be helping the future of this sport. He is a big lad, naturally there will be a physical side to his game. The people who are writing bad stuff on this about Glenanne just don't know the players. Writing stuff about people who you don't even know is a disgrace. Would you not talk about other issues of the Irish game like an all Ireland league and the promotion of the sport in the country. If you were as passionate about them kind of issues it would do the sport a lot more good.
