Jugraj Singh's much-awaited comeback may be just on the anvil.
The ace drag flicker looked in fine nick as he went through the paces at the coaching camp here under national junior hockey coach Harendra Singh who was quick to point out that Jugraj did "deserve" at least one international match to prove he was indeed fit to play.
"He is a good fighter, the way he has progressed, I think he is ready for international hockey now," Harendra told PTI today.
Jugraj was in action in a match against CRPF yesterday -- not only did he play for the entire duration of the match but also scored two goals for his team.
"There is no doubt that he is match fit, but to know whether he can come good in an international match, we must give him one match to play at the highest level," the coach said.
Jugraj has been out of international action for more than two years since he met with a near fatal accident but has defied all odds to stake a claim for a place in the Indian team which has been struggling to find a replacement for the penalty corner expert.
A desperate Rajinder Singh Junior, the senior coach, had recently stated that the team "badly needed" Jugraj back as he was the key if India had to script a turnaround in their spiralling fortunes.
Harendra could not have agreed with Rajinder Singh more. "Jugraj is a great team man and a great fighter. His very presence lifts up the spirits of everyone else on the field. He is great role model for youngsters as he has proved that nothing is impossible if one is determined and ready to give more than 100 per cent," Harendra said.
Unfortunately, that determination seemed to be lacking in the national team at the moment, he said.
"The team also seems to have lost the hunger to win matches. In the Rabo Trophy, the boys lacked the fighting spirit. In the match against Pakistan, for instance, they did not display any fighting spirit at all.
"You may be having internal problems but that cannot be an excuse for not giving your best for your team and for your country," he said.
India lost to arch-rivals Pakistan 2-1 en route to a dismal seventh place finish in the eight-nation Rabo Trophy tournament played in Amstelveen, Holland, recently.
Harendra said instead of cribbing and complaining to everyone, the players should try and talk out their problems with the coach and if needed with the Indian Hockey Federation.
"If I have a problem, I will discuss it with Mr Gill. If he does not listen to me, then I have a problem, but if he solves my problem I have no reason to complain.

Actually if one goes back down memory lane a bit, from a seemingly strong position, the Indian hockey team suddenly seemed to fall apart. We had won 2 tournaments in Germany and Australia and the team was in splendid shape. Dhanraj Pillay and Jugraj were in the team and they alongwith Gagan and company were in fine form. Then Jugraj's unfortunate injury happened and I for one can say that since then our team lost its way....the boys have been playing as if somebody is missing in the team.
Well lets hope that with the return of Jugraj (hope he regains his old form), this will give that vital spark to the team. Come on India, we can do it. Lets go out there firing on all cylinders and show the world what Indian hockey is all about.

It would be great to see Jugraj playing at the highest level again, not just for Indian hockey, but for the game in general. His performance in that stunning game against Pakistan in the Amsterdam CT group game a few years ago was sensational.

Jugaraj
Hey LAD,
Nice to c ur name in INDEX, and expact to read some intelegent views  anyway Jugaraj is back all Indian hockey's prayer's wishes come true. Let c wts next.
We can c Thayagraj's artical in THE HINDU, but not that much imprasive this time. IHF looks like to repeat old stories " Chang of Coach" , according to me Team is improving no doubt they were at 7th place but improvement in defence I think very good good improvement, look the margin, it speeks it self.
Forward didn't click thats true, they have chance to show improvement Malyasian series. Let the Rajinder Jr. give chance as much as Gill promised.
Return of Jugaraj will boost the Defence and Drag flick area. I hope Vikram and Sandeep will be back so, more strength in midfield and drag flick.
Who cares wt the world say, Hockey is in the blood.

india vs Pakistan
Guys.....i think it's high time we forget that the world has only 2 countries in it.......we have to look beyond just the stupid india vs Pak talk.........we have to improve our performances and not just rely on victories over our neighbour........Pak has improved leaps and bounds, has trophies to show over the last decade, while we have only occasional victories to boast of!......it's time we grow up, realise that the hockey world has left us far behind and before it's all over, pull up our socks and try to compete with the rest of the world and not only Pak!! There is no point in standing last but still grinning that we beaten pakistan because that is pointless. We cannot continue to be the laughing stock of the rest of the hockey world.
