NIGEL DUNCAN

SCOTLAND'S men square up to Spain in a pre-European Championship hockey challenge in Germany tonight with a full squad, writes NIGEL DUNCAN.

The players have been working hard on their penalty corner routines and defence in the build-up to Sunday's European Championship opener against Germany in Leipzig.

Scotland also play Belgium and England in their round-robin qualifying section and the target is survival in A Division.

Edinburgh-based Eugene Connolly, Scotland's team manager, said: "We've beaten both Belgium and England and, if we do that, then we stand a real chance of making the semi-finals. That would be a massive boost as third and fourth-placed teams play off and the outcome could have a real bearing on our ability to reach the World Cup qualifiers."

Scotland's women were relegated from A Division last weekend and Connolly said: "The top eight in Europe is a tough place to be and we know we have a tough job on our hands."

Apart from the ridiculous headgear I thought Tango was his usual mediocre self and didn’t look out of place in a side peppered with mediocre performances. You’ve got to pick your battles, the Bosch are the best side in the tournament, the real test comes tonight against our cousins South of the border.
