India have cancelled a proposed five-match Test series with the Malaysian national hockey team scheduled for Sept 20-30 in Hyderabad.
Instead, the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) have proposed that the series be held in late October followed by two four-nation meets.
The new dates have been fixed for Oct 30-Nov 5 in Hyderabad while the two tournaments have been slated for Nov 8-12 in Chennai and Nov 14-18 in New Delhi.
IHF secretary-general K. Jothi Kumaran confirmed in a telephone interview yesterday that the September Test series had been cancelled and said they had given a new proposal to the Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) to consider.
The MHF are in a quandary as the fasting period starts in October. The national team are supposed to report for training after the Malaysia Hockey league ends on Sept 11.
MHF secretary T. Paramalingam said that they had received the new proposals and had passed it on to the team management for consideration.
“The problem with the new dates is that they are smack in the middle of the Deepavali and Hari Raya periods.
“We have to consider that,” he said.
Paramalingam said they would now look for other places to go in September now.
“We will write to a few countries and see who can accommodate us.”
Among the countries the MHF are considering are Japan or South Korea.
