The voices of dissent against Indian Hockey Federation chief K P S Gill appear to be growing with a national selector today blaming the former Punjab supercop of making a "complete mockery" of the selection process.
"The entire selection process has been made into a farce. The IHF is nothing but a one-man show being run by Gill," Aslam Sher Khan, a former player turned selector said in an interview here.
Aslam, an accomplished full back in his playing days, said Gill should take the "blame and responsibility" for the team's dismal run in the recent Rabo Trophy where it finished a lowly seventh.
"The selectors are nothing but puppets in the hands of Gill. We are there just for namesake. It is Gill who dictates what the team should be and he only drops the players as and when he feels like.
"Only God knows and Gill knows who will make it to the team." Aslam, one of the six members of the selection panel which also includes Gill and IHF Secretary K Jothikumaran, said the IHF chief should be made accountable for the team's performances.
"The Government, which pumps in nearly Rs 40 lakh for every tournament, should ask an explanation from Gill for the mess that Indian hockey finds itself in today.
"But it appears the Government has closed its eyes, it is not bothered despite the fact that it is their money and prestige which are at stake."

it seems the government is also scared of the super cop, then why blame the poor show of the team.let it go on until indian team becomes the last team in world ranking and then we will wake up and have one day media attention and then forget and concentrate only in politics and politics and.....politics because they are indian heroes and not sportsmen.

team selection
Aslam's comments are opportunistic and in poor taste. Why did he not speak out before the tournament and olympics ? No doubt a free trip to Germany before the olympics was too juicy to resist ! If he felt that the selection committee was not being allowed to work independently, he should have said so immediately and resigned. Mr khan you are no better than the opportunistic clowns of the ihf when you talk after the event.

Is Aslam a heroic whistle-blower? You question it, and fair enough, I am however reluctant to speculate on Aslam's motivations. I do not know what was at personal risk.
It is also not clear if the comments were pre-tournament, during or post-tournament. Such is the quality of indian journalism! Another reason for my reluctance to speculate.
Ok so much for Aslam's opportunism. Why is it in poor taste?
As well, if Aslam speaks up before the tournament he will be criticized by the voices, some of their comments were on this site, that criticized VJ Phillips because they felt the players need all the support pre-tournament (I wondered if the players are that tender-minded then we are in for trouble).
If he speaks after the tournament, you consider it in poor taste. So if you blend the two schools of critics and Aslam were a man of taste, he should take a vow of silence.
Nick, when you focus on motivations you enter the area of the personal and distract from the merit of the argument. It doesn't deal with the issue.
WHAT IS KEY IN MY MIND: Is there an issue here or not? if there is what should be done/can be done about it and by who? if no issue, why is it not an issue?
My criticism of Aslam was when he was union minister could he not have raised the issue of governance and accountability of the nation's sports federations in cabinet? May be he did and failed or it just fell off as a priority. Who knows? Didn't he write a book about indian hockey a few years ago?
In any event, I think he raises good points.

aslam's comments
uknow,
your point taken. I feel that Aslam had plenty of opportunities to speak up re the autocratic ways of Gill and the impotence of the so called selection committee. He chose to do so after we were beaten badly. The honourable thing for him was to have given these reasons, resigned immediately and wished good luck to our team.
His problems with Gurfan e Azam in the past are well known. He was a good player, I dont question it, but his prolonged silence as a member of the selection committee is unjustified. He could have brought these details prior to the IHF elections and maybe forced them to mend their ways. At least the whole nation would have been aware of " problems " of the selection committee before this team was selected.

oh people dont waste your time in blaming gill.he is great experimenter like a mad scientist.
his recent experiments in rabobank where to keep len and sandeep out so more field goals could be hit.but this failed like all his previos stupid experiments.
now he is going to have his final experiment of the century to cancel all the local tournaments in india till champions trophy so player can better prepare for our final champions trophy.(after this india will be never playing in champions trophy)
can someone tell me how this will work.but gill knows better.
Mr.gill you killed our hockey

about time!
Guys.....i think it's high time we forget that the world has only 2 countries in it.......we have to look beyond just the stupid india vs Pak talk.........we have to improve our performances and not just rely on victories over our neighbour........Pak has improved leaps and bounds, has trophies to show over the last decade, while we have only occasional victories to boast of!......it's time we grow up, realise that the hockey world has left us far behind and before it's all over, pull up our socks and try to compete with the rest of the world and not only Pak!! There is no point in standing last but still grinning that we beaten pakistan because that is pointless. We cannot continue to be the laughing stock of the rest of the hockey world.
