Dilip Tirkey

Bhubaneswar: When India hockey captain Dilip Tirkey landed at Bhubaneswar airport yesterday, there was nobody to greet him!

India finished a poor seventh in the Rabo Trophy tournament at Amsterdam recently. ‘‘I am sorry,” he said. “We disappointed Indian hockey fans and could not live up to their expectations.’’

However, he felt the team gave their 100 per cent which was not good enough.

Tirkey did not indulge in any blame game. Instead, he he was looking forward to improving the conversion rate of penalty corners and sharpening the counter attack aspect.

Tirkey felt the matches were closely fought and India did not concede many goals.

He attributed India’s failure to the inability to capitalise on scoring chances especially inside the opposition striking circle.

There's the problem right there! I don't think you can have SCORING CHANCES from OUTSIDE. In all fairness, he has probably been misquoted.

Problem with converting corners is that if your main corner striker, Didar Singh this time, is sitting on the bench for most of the game, you are not going to be very successful. Why? Clearly the coach didn't have much confidence in him; then why bring him. This is where the selection process kicks in, I suspect!

I was at the games and India didn't gain that many corners. And the some members of the team did give 1005, but they never, collectively gave 100%. Maybe down to lack of harmony within the camp or poor domestic hockey standards as one indian put it.

We badly need some useful inside forwards and co-ordinated attackers. Oh, some playmakers in the back 4 may produce co-ordinated opportunities for the forwards. Our IHF and the coaches live in cuckoo land!
