To bad for the hockey community in WA which he made a commitment to coach a mere 3 months ago, guess thats over before it even started.

How do you know he won't be honouring those commitments? Coaching the Thundersticks is a 2 month undertaking... what do you s'pose he do for the remaining 10?

Ric won't be fulfilling his duties with the Thundersticks. Jason Duff has been re-appointed the position. Ric would of/could of been fantastic but when he found out you don't get paid to coach the WA AHL teams I think he might have decided to go shopping. Good luck to him over there - a wonderful opportunity. Another top Aussie coach lost to an overseas hockey or cricket team!!!

congrats to Ric. It is just a great shame that Australia have let such a coach, person, go!
As for the commitment to the thundersticks, I assume that the prior coach will just take over or Ric will return. Either way, I am sure that he has thought it through and made a decision that is best for HIM. After all he has been ignored by Australian hockey over the past few years, why shouldn't he take this job?

How has hockey in Australia ignored him????????
He coached the hockeyroos up until Sydney and then HE decided he had, had enough of that lifestyle and retired as coach and moved to Italy for 3 or so years and wrote he's books, The Mens team in the mean time created history and won the gold, before Ric decided he wanted to coach them, Like they were ever going to dump Barry Dancer after his efforts in Athens, and whats to say he isnt as good of a coach as Ric he's only just been given a chance in the last 4 years and from recent efforts they certainly haven't taken a backwards step. But for Ric it has always been on his terms, and this time there just wasn't a position for him where he wanted it to be. Good on him for taking on a new challenge in a sport he has had some experience in but I would not be surprised if he's name again popped up in the mix after 2008 olympics!

Wrong!! Ric didn't move to Italy for 3 year to write his books. He went to Italy for a year! He has also a number of times tried to return to hockey in Australia, even if it was to be under his terms, who in there right mind would not accept them!
The men did create history but NOT before he wanted to coach them. And yes your right, Barry is doing a great job. Noone has said otherwise.
My point is that in Australia you have the best coach there is in the hockey world, coaching, managing AFL en now Cricket.
As for not being surprised if his name POPS up after 2008. His name should be put forward, australia should take him on and put a young talentfull coach next to him who can in the future take over the reins. Australia chased him in 1992/3 and are now turning there back on him because he is a diificult man! Difficult maybe, succesfull definitely!

Barrier is factually wrong. Ric may be opinionated but he said he needed a rest after Sydney. HA offered him the mens job saying he could take a year off and they would get an interim coach. I understand he declined as the WC was in March 2002 and he felt that that would not be fair on the players with only 3 months to prepare. Sounded like quite a principled act.
He always said he thought he would be involved again (just read his book) and given Athens he was interested in the u/21 job. So HA did ignor his credentials there. Those credentials were 8 consecutive years as no1. I doubt that will ever be equalled.
We should hope he comes back from NZ refreshed and welcome him. The Thundersticks are the worse for his leaving but he was doing it for nothing!

HOCKEY AUSTRALIA FULL OF FAT CATS CAN'T FIND ANY ROLE IN THE ORGANISATION FOR GREAT COACHES (CHARLESWORTH) AND SUSPEND THEIR BEST PLAYERS (ELDER) NO WONDER HOCKEY IN AUSTRALIA IS NOT PROFESSIONAL.

Hockey in Australia is no-where near professional.
For example, during the Men’s Junior World Cup which, just took place in Rotterdam, Hockey Australia printed on their website on at least two separate occasions that Rotterdam was in Germany. I didn't think you could be that bad at geography...especially from a "professional" body.
Also a couple of times they listed some team members (who participated in the JWC) names incorrectly.
Stuff like that reflects very poorly on hockey as a whole.
If you can't get simple stuff like that right it's no wonder they might have trouble running the sport and making a dollar or two along the way.

You make a good point Scott... If I can bring your attention to the picture of Dan Hotchkis (JWC Member) on the player profiles section of the HA webiste..
I know Hot-Cheeks and that isn't him...
