The Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) have decided that the Razak Cup competition this year will be a two-tier affair.
The competitions committee, which met on Sunday, made the decision because the weaker teams were unwilling to play in a one-division competition where they would be thrashed by the stronger sides.
The committee chairman, Datuk Bashir Abdul Majid, said yesterday that the teams for the two-division format tournament to be played in Klang from Sept 23-30 would be decided based on the results of last year's event.
The two-division format was introduced in 1992 but was discarded in 1999 because there were less than 10 teams in the fray.
For this year's competition, Police are likely to make their debut after being admitted as an affiliate of the MHF last year.
The other teams who have given positive replies are Kuala Lumpur, Perak, Malacca, Johor, Pahang, Penang, Perlis, Negri Sembilan and Selangor.
The MHF are waiting for the replies from the Armed Forces and Kedah. There is also an indication that Thailand may send a team.
The MHF will send invitations to neighbouring countries to take part in the tournament. Singapore have competed regularly and they were in the competition last year.
The National Juniors also featured regularly in recent years. But they will not be in the competition this time because the MHF have yet to form a new team.
Entries for the tournament will close this week.
