Karen Brown, Women’s Under 21 Head Coach, today announced her squad for the forthcoming Junior World Cup in Chile. The U21 women travel to Santiago on 8 September 2005 for the event which starts on 14 September.
In selected the squad Brown said “It was extremely difficult o make the final choice which is a credit to everyone who has been involved in the programme over the last six months. We believe this is a talented group of athletes who will be competitive at the Junior World Cup and beyond.”
The U21’s have recently returned from a trip to Holland where they played the number 1 seeds for the tournament three times over four days. Brown said “Whilst the Dutch won all three matches, 3-2, 2-1 and 4-2, seven of the Dutch goals came from penalty corners and all England’s were field goals demonstrating that if we can improve in the important area of set piece play we could do well at the tournament.”
The squad will be captained by 21 year old Hannah Macleod of Leicester HC and has a nice balance of youth and experience with seven of the players having already made their senior England debuts.

England squad
I didn't know Chris Mayer was an England selector. Do you just have to play for leicester to play for England?

Observer's lack of observational skills
Dear Observer
Your comment may have been tongue in cheek but detailed observation of Leicester games might provide a more appropriate explanation of the presence of 7 Leicester girls in the 18 and 2 more in the reserves. They just happen to be pretty good, mate. Crista Cullen was voted top Prem League player of last season, Beccie Herbert was adjudged Young Player of the Year in 2004. All 9 played roles in Leicester's League and Cup double last year. Would a 'well done Leicester' be too much to expect?

Congrats to all players in the squad and all clubs involved in nurturing these players. I find it strange that people on this site seem to want to aclaim Leicester for developing these players do the Leicester club give thanks to England who have also improved these players , A question for the Leicester fans how many hours and money have England put inro Crista Cullen, Helen Richardson and all the other players that have attended Centres of Excellence and all those training camps both here and overseas. England's role sometimes gets forgotten by the clubs. Just a thought.

Why is your first sentence so contradictory of the rest of your comment. You say congrats to all clubs and then say 'why acclaim Leicester'? That makes a lot of sense. You suggest that Leicester fans do not appreciate the time invested in our players by England coaches. How do you know that? It's just inevitable that when a club gets so many players into the England U21 side that a sense of club pride takes precedence over giving the England set-up a pat on the back. Most credit should go to the 18 players selected and I am sure that we would all love to see them win a medal in Chile.

Just get behind us!
Nothing wrong with a bit of discussion but we are currently trying to concentrate on doing our best at the World Cup with the great team we are taking out to Chile, not fuel a club vs country debate. We all greatly appreciate all of the support we have had from our clubs, schools and England hockey, no to mention parents and friends. However, our concern for the next month is not how we got to this stage and who deserves a pat on the back, but to go to the World Cup, play to the best of our ability and bring back a medal. That should be a reflection of the hard work put in by everyone...including us!
