Olympic champs Australia showed their firepower annihilating England 6-2 in the Rabo trophy hockey tournament yesterday.

Though they had to wait till the 33rd minute for the lead, it was a virtual blitz in the second half from the men from Down Under which left England at the bottom of Pool B.

The scorers were Mathew Wells (33), Jamie Dwyer (45), Grant Schubert (50), Ben Bishop (54)Luke Doerner (65) and Matthew Naylor (70).

The marksmen for England were Richard alexander (37) and Rob Moore (60).

England, however, put up a spirited fight in the first session and came close to drawing first blood on three occassions.

In the opening minutes of the match, a low Jonty Clark hit was well taken by Aussie custodian Stephen Lambert. Then efforts from James Tindall and Barry Middleton went abegging.

Aussie Coach Barry Dancer was pleased with the performance and said that his boys were settling down and playing to their potential.

this is turning into a farce, I understand the need to blood new boys, but the players will never recover from these "drubbings"

I hope the coach knows what he is doing

As per normal when it really comes down to it we are not good enough. But at least Jason Lee has a long term plan which is far better than any before him.

England
They were bad, very bad with no method and no ability to adapt their play to take advantage of the oppositions weeknesses. If the coach really believes this squad is the best he can muster, he is an incompetent fool. There was not one English player on show who was international class compared with the players from the other teams.
I suggest Lee gets himself some natual goal scorers who also have vision. Yet again they didn't know what to do once they got into the last third of the pitch. And yes I have seen beeter players playing in nat div 2 & 3.

I bet the fools running our sport would have thought the recent english results would have taken the heat of the self appointed 1988 members. I've got news for them they will now have to address a very serious situation and fire the non qualified performance director and appoint someone who has a good track record, and please not another job for the boys.

Come on all you players lets start talking up the new english hockey season which starts soon. What about new players joining which clubs and leaving clubs.

A little dodgy speculation won't go amiss.

I understand there is a lot of movement going on at Reading, Old loughts, Subition, Teddington, plus other clubs.

I believe KB won't be playing for EGrinstead this season, that will mean automatic demotion then !!.

The Payne boys have EG blood running through their veins, so you mischief maker posting cr*p get your facts right. Ben Payne wouldn't move even if it guaranteed him an international place, which looking at the recent england results he might yet get the call from Jason Lee.

Great chat about KB, would be very interesting to see him play against a whole team (officially,as opposed to every EG league match) My moneys on KB, have seen him beat 7 players in the opponents 'D' before but this way he's got more space....Easy!

Good comments on Prem 1 - sounds like it'd be a good season to get TV coverage? But suppose there'll be more speedway, aerobics Oz style and extreme hangliding to watch instead of a popular mass participation sport such as hockey...

How's about some speculation on the new league format for the "3rd divisions"? Winners and losers in North and South leagues? Or does nobody care about these leagues now? Any big players down at those depths?

The Gun Show
Sorry to dissapoint but am still very much at Loughts, top set of boys this year!

There will however be two tickets to 'the gun show' available every sunday commencing the 24th September, preveiws against Cannock on the 4th....

All this transfer talk takes me back to my Guildford comment "a team is greater than the sum of its parts". Beware the Pre-madonna...looks great on paper, never lives up to his potential& often has a detrimental effect!

EG/Surbiton/Holcombe: I also hear Michael Owen is still on the market? Perhaps Mr EG could make an 'ungentlemanly' approach for him aswell! &there was me thinking the premier league still adhered to this gentlemans agreement of coaches not contacting people directly? Maybe things hav changed? News to me....

Tindall seriously gone to Surbiton? They must have assembled a pretty serious looking squad by now! Ebsworth, Stagno, Peckett, Southgate, Garrard, Ratdog, Marsden (whoever he is?), Wallis, Emery, Tindall, Daly, Webber..... Serious title contenders? Bring in a big overseas signing& you've got a younger version of Reading 2years ago?!

The current english management team couldn't organise a "piss up in a brewery" let alone negotiate televison coverage for the english hockey national league.

My son works for Sky Sports and they have never been approached by the hockey authorities, which goes to prove how little they really care about promoting the sport.

England clearly have no hope of getting a medal, even winning a game at the Euros, without their key players who have inexplicably been dropped. Without the inclusion of players like Martin Jones, Jimmy Lewis and now the injury to Richard Mantell, things can only get worse. How on earth are we supposed to beat the likes of Austrailia without our main strikers and with James Steadman upfront? I don't even know if he's scored an international goal yet??

If you were a keen hockey fan you would have checked that James Stedman has been the top scorer in open field goals in the English team since being selected.

The reason why so many of the old guard are no longer playing, is they thought they were bigger and new more than coach Lee and became disruptive, so the coach rightly got rid of them so the word on the street is reporting.

Things will not get any better whilst they have a non qualified performance director who nobody and I mean nobody has any respect for.

Read the thread, not just the bits at the end and....hey presto, your questions are answered!

Jules has now assembled a squad of players he wants to work with, top set of boys, all good mates, all with premier league experience, with a few stars mixed in for good measure.
To the doubters, maybe we're not as good on paper as last year, but allready theres great banter in training, a top work ethic with boys voluntarily doing diamonds at the end of training! Neither of the above happened last year....
Nothing against the players that have gone, maybe we needed more time to gel?

Jason Lee
Is the england international door totally closed to any player not currently in the squad !!. Having seen the current bunch play I would have thought Lee would be looking to replace minimum 6-7 players.

If the postings on this site are factual Surbiton & Cannock will be vying for the top spot, unfortunately having all the top players playing in 3 - 4 teams means yet again our internationals will be getting fewer competitve matches which in turn damages progression as they need weekly competitive games to improve, and not strolls in the park against the likes of Chelmsford, Hampstead & Westminster, & Old Lought's etc., etc.,.

I would prefer "if I had my time again" to play for a mid league side knowing I was playing competitive hockey every week rather than 4 or 5 games a season, this way you can judge your performance and know if you are improving weekly. What does it prove playing against inferior teams 14 out 18 games a season, it just shows that most of the current international team have no bottle when a push comes to a shove and take the easy option, that is why Jason Lee should be looking elsewhere for replacements to those who have clearly under performed for England. Pick those who know how to servive and compete, because they do it weekly throughout the season and not just for 3 or 4 games.

While I dont profess to know it all,I cant help but notice the number of pontificating individuals here.Having an opinion is healthy.Expressing your opinion without having access to key material facts-premature.

I would love to see a post this long when england have done well.It appears that people only have time to criticize.Perhaps, thats because it may be easier to identify failure than success. To those that think they should be in the team, this is not the place to rant and rave.Go out there and do the business.

To ex-international:
While I do agree on your point about the lack of sufficient competitive games/season,you overlook one thing.Training with elite players is also a form of competitiveness.Teams in Holland train 3-5 sessions/week.In England twice/week is a bonus. How do we compete? You can import elite coaches but look at the coaching environment that currently exists in the clubs.A cultural shift is required.

*Saw the Eng v Belgium match yesterday. The player who really stood out for me while I watched was Ben Hawes(right back). The high number of pc's given away is a concern. While watching felt the defending in the 25m area left a lot to be desired.

Pushing Gerrad into the 'hole' only works if you can retain a numerical advantage with your back 4.If the opposition step right up and turn it into a 4 v 4 against your back 4,then what?Either your midfield are red hot in tight spaces or this has the makings of a counterattack scenario.Yes,by all means throw an overhead. However, the primary goal ought to be about making effective use of possession as opposed to just getting the ball out the back.

When you run your 2-2 as you did yesterday. You need to manage the risk by ensuring the pspot is not an area of vulnerability. The slip-deflection variation in front of Gerrad, looks like a banker.

**Saw the Australia game:It would be inaccurate to lay the whole 'blame' with Brothers. The collective defensive concept fell apart.

Thats my 2cents for the day.Play well England.

you are not looking at the whole picture. reading have been very succesful domestically and in europe in recent years but they have only two players in the current squad. cannock have also been very succesful. the edicts that accompany england squad selection are such that anyone who has a career to try to enhance can no longer afford to play.
this leaves us with students and others who maybe do not have career ambitions. the current side is inexperienced for this reason.
it is a shame that there is not strenghth in depth in the premier league but that is the way it is. i would hate to see hockey going the way of football where some stray billionaire can try to buy success.
you cannot blame players for wanting to play at cannock or reading to play in european competition because if they cannot afford to play international hockey this is the next best thing.
also your comments about 3 or four games forgets the fact that the premiership play-offs this year were 3 games in 3 days and the european championship was 4 in 4. players that can thrive in that sort of pressure are more likely to be able to hack it at international level than those who play once a week. why should those who have been playing in mid table in the league be any better.
we have to face the facts that we are, at the moment, playing to our world ranking which is considerably lower than we would like. there are very talented players at school level who simply do not continue playing because there is no tangible reward as in pro football, rugby and golf. clubs are struggling to survive financially and find it difficult to promote their junior facilities which will give us the players of the future.
and please do not start the "paying players" thread again because neither cannock or reading do so that has nothing to do with their success.

You are very selective in your arguments regarding my posting, but the facts remain internationals limit themselves to fewer competitive games by joining the elite 3-4 clubs and this proves they have no bottle when a push comes to a shove. And the comment regarding, if you continue to play well you will get your chance is abslute rubbish, as there are many players sitting at home who are better all-round players than 6 or 7 currently in the squad. I totally stand by my first posting.

Hockey coach, what a pleasure to read someone who was there and seems to be able to grasp some of the tactical elements of the game. Also a bit of perspective and not looking for the scape goat.
To ex-international re:comments about mid-table.
I think its short sighted on a couple of fronts to say you would rather play for a mid-table team.
I would venture that the training at strong top of the table clubs is of a higher standard. A twice a week edge they gain by playing there.
While i believe you are somewhat correct and i can see the benefit in saying that you would choose to play competitive hockey where your performance week in and out will probably be a large influence on your team's results.
However don't you think its a little unfair to punish the players playing for the top clubs who get into europe and contest the league by saying 'right, you guys have done well as a group and in your individual play. As a result your club is at the top of the league. Unfortunately we are not looking for any good players from top teams in the england set up at the mo, sorry.'
i know i'm taking what you said a bit literally but hopefully i've illustrated a counter-point.

I doubt Ian Kibble would write that about himself so I don't think we should criticize him.

One player stood out for me yesterday and that is Alexander. I don't remember him making a clean tackle. He just charged round like a bull in a china shop clattering opponents sticks and not protecting his feet. It looked so easy to win a penalty corner against him, and they are the things that seem to win and lose games at this level.
