KUALA LUMPUR: Former South Korean forward Kang Keon-wook has made up for his poor scoring rate for Sapura in the Malaysia Hockey League (MHL) with the winning goal against Tenaga Nasional in a crucial match on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old Keon-wok had in six previous matches scored only three goal.

It was his goal off the penalty corner against defending overall champions Tenaga in the second half that gave Sapura a 2-1 win. With the victory, Sapura are back on track to retain the league title.

“And I am glad that I scored the important goal. Now our chance to retain the title looks quite good. It was a big relief for me to score the goal because I had not been scoring regularly,” said Keon-wook.

Sapura remain on top of the table in the 11-team league with 18 points from seven matches. They will retain the title with victories in their remaining three matches, beginning with the match against Telekom Malaysia at the KL Hockey Stadium tomorrow.

Their other matches are against Maybank on Tuesday and Sultan Ahmad Shah of Pahang next Friday.

Keon-wook added that they were also happy to have exacted revenge against Tenaga, who defeated them in the semi-finals last year.

“It was great win over Tenaga, who gave us a tough fight until the final whistle. We held on well to win the match,” he said.

“Now the course looks set for us to retain the title. I hope we will play well enough to win the remaining three matches.”
