The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has warned the Pakistan team over an incident involving their captain Muhammad Saqlain in a match against Australia in the Hamburg Masters Tournament.

The report sent to FIH by Tournament Director Alain Renaud said that last Sunday Australian striker Craig Victory had to seek immediate hospitalisation and dental treatment after he received facial injuries during the match against Pakistan.

The FIH held a meeting on Tuesday, attended by Els van Breda Vriesman (FIH President), Tony von Ondarzar (FIH Vice President), Saeed Khan (Pakistan Team Manager) and Steve Catton (Tournament Director Rabo Trophy), where the Pakistan hockey team was cautioned about this and informed that further investigation will take place in due course.

FIH also said that a team captain is expected to play an exemplary role during the game.

Saqlain was dropped on disciplinary grounds before the Athens Olympics and was red carded during the last Azlan Shah Cup in May at Kuala Lumpur for frayed temper and attack on a rival player.

saqlain not fit to be captain
saqlain has a very poor disciplinary record and even after becoming the captain his behaviour has not changed. it is very strange that PHF is still keeping him as captain

Saqlain
Gutless effort Saqlain. It won't be long before he gets picked off himself for not playing the ball.

justice prevails
for a long period of time ,europeans and Aussies are famous for aggresive and body play........now we have one Asian player doing a little bit and they are making a big issue... watch 1994 WC game Pakistan vs Aus and see how aussie defenders played against great SHAHBAZ sr....they delibrately pushed him many time and he fell and finally in the middle of second half when he had all efforts done and had center fwd scored goal # 2 ,he had to leave due to injuries??????????? what umpire did at that time?????? pakistani players protested but umpires had no ears...so i think saqlain did right and thats how others should be treated .... Tit for Tat???????

Please don't ever suggest it is ok to strike a player. To suggest one player is comical.
Saqlain has recent history and what has happend will not be forgotten lightly. I seem to remember one of the Pakistan players striking a Welsh players head at the CG and I am sure that is not the only time. Now I am not suggesting it is only one country at all. There is no need for it in the game and it is great to see the FiH making a stand. If you struck someone like that on the street would you not end up in court???
whatever

adjudicator you are an idiot. if you are saying that it is alright to hit players in the head behind the play and thats what everyone should be doing....
theres a difference between using body pressure on someone over the ball and cowardly hitting someone in the face behind play.
i would like to play against you and smash out a few of your teeth

Not the first time for Saqlain, who is an agressive player. But adjudicator, there's a difference between playing physically and smacking someone round the head. It's good to see the FIH make a stand for once. Playing hard is normal in all team sports, using the stick as a weapon is not on.

Strong FIH Action required
How much longer can this criminal be allowed to play international hockey. At least 3 recent incidents involving him - attack on fellow team mate with stick to head in training session in Paksitan prior to Olympics and he is dropped from Olympic team by Dutch coach, Korean player hospitalised at Azlan Shah after being hit in the face behind the play, and now an Aussie player smashed in the face sustaining horrific injuries to face and teeth. All incidents with the stick to the head/face behind the play.

Why is he not charged by police in Germany? If he did this in street he would be sent to jail for a long time. It is just like someone coming up behind a person in the street without warning and smashing them with a hockey stick in the head. A person in this situation without warning is defenceless.

What action does FIH take in this matter? This player should be banned for life and FIH should send a strong message out that such cowardly/lethal behaviour will not be tolerated under any circumstances by any player from any country. There can be no justification whatsoever for such conduct.

As for adjudicator's comments - one Asian player 'doing a little bit'. You are beyond belief! Is it alright for a player to do a 'little bit' each tournament he plays in to ensure he gets at least one player admitted to hospital? Do you think it is alright to hit people in the head with a hockey stick? How can you possibly justify this sort of criminal behaviour. Strong physical play does not involve hitting people behind the play with a stick to the head!

Poor show Saqlain
As a Pakistani I am ashamed that our Captain is upto such rotten behaviour. There is no excuse for intentionally hitting someone with the stick. Though Pakistan has played well his bad behaviour has left a bad taste in the moutn.....

All these comments but nobody knows the real story.

See the video before you comment. Saqlain did hit the player who tackled from the wrong side and how can that be stopped? He was not aware that the Aussie was going to tackle him from the wrong side so the Poor Guy got hit and Saqlain is hauled before FIH, Why? Some of you as a Lock, stock and Barrel have sentenced him, Why?

All of you can make nasty comments about Saqlain but I saw Fair action.

Before any one of you accuses me, I am not a Pakistani but an English Hockey Umpire who was at the Masters.

Absolutely there is no excuse for his behaviour. Equally hockey is suppose to be non contact sport. To suggest body checking etc by physcially stronger players is tolerable is also not right. For too long European and Aussies have been gaining advantage through putting their bodies in the way of skilful play. FIH should also do something about this aspect of th game.

Your opinion: "Saqlain did hit the player who tackled from the wrong side and how can that be stopped? He was not aware that the Aussie was going to tackle him from the wrong side so the Poor Guy got hit and Saqlain is hauled before FIH".

My Response: The ball would have to be in the area for it to be considered a tackle - Saqlain had passed the ball and then followed up with another movement. An accident? I think not.

Get rid of him.
