VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Maryland field hockey team traveled down to Virginia Beach, Va., on Tuesday evening to take on the U.S. National Team in an exhibition match. The Terps were edged by the Red, White and Blue, 2-1.
The U.S. took a first-half, 1-0, lead. In the second half, senior Jackie Ciconte (Wilmington, Del.) knotted up the score, 1-1. The Terps were awarded a penalty corner and Ciconte knocked in the rebound for the score.
With just four minutes remaining in the game, the United States tallied the final and deciding goal to pull ahead of Maryland, 2-1.
Maryland played against former Terps Sara Silvetti (Wapwallopen, Pa.) and Dina Rizzo (Walpole, Mass.). Silvetti was an All-American last season and Rizzo, who was a 2001 All-American, was a volunteer assistant coach last year.
All-American senior Lauren Powley (Mountaintop, Pa.) was also playing against a familiar foe. She spent the summer as a member of the U.S. National Team, earning the starting position at center midfield.
Maryland returns for preseason workouts on Wednesday, Aug. 17, and opens the 2005 campaign at Northwestern on Aug. 28
