There were mixed fortunes for Scotland yesterday as the men thumped Wales 4-2 in the final build-up match prior to the European Nations Cup in Leipzig while the women were on the wrong end of an eight-goal hammering at the hands of Germany in Dublin.
Douglas Simpson opened the scoring when his penalty corner drag flick struck the foot of a Welsh defender and squirmed over the line and a minute later dummied the goalkeeper to be left with the simple task of stroking the ball home for the second. Although the Welsh stole a goal back just after the interval, Simpson helped re-establish the advantage when his cross found Jonathan Christie, who scored at the second attempt after his initial shot was saved. With 10 minutes left the result was sealed with a Chris Nelson tap-in after Olympian Niall Stott had done all the spade work. Wales sneaked a late counter.
Nobody expected Scotland's women to beat the Olympic champions Germany in the opening match of the European Cup in Dublin, but to lose 8-0 was certainly a bit of a massacre. Doubles from Fanny Rinne and Natascha Keller and a single strike from Kerstin Hoyer gave the favourites a nap hand by half-time, with only a single attempt from En-Croute Western's Holly Cram to lift the gloom. The Germans promptly put in another three after the break.

I gather the Welsh drew the first game 1-1, following a dubious Scottish equalizer, and the final game, the 4-2, was there fourth in five days! I also understand they were suffering from some serious injuries, illness and unavailability so that at least 5 squad members were missing! I'm not sure if a 4-2 scoreline is exactly a thumping anyway, but especially under these circumstances...! Best of luck to the Scots in the A Division and lets hope the Welsh are promoted to the A Division and qualify for the World Cup qualifiers.
