The Australian men's hockey team has finished second behind the Netherlands in the four-nation Hamburg Masters tournament in Germany.

The Kookaburras defeated Pakistan 4-3 in their final match of tournament to keep their slim title chances alive.

However the Dutch, needing only a draw to claim the title, produced a 2-2 result in their final match against hosts Germany.

The Netherlands finished with seven points, one point clear of the Australians who won two of their three matches.

The Germans finished with four points, while Pakistan failed to post a single point from its three games.

Dutchman Teun de Nooijer was named player of the tournament.
