India paid the price for a sloppy show in the first half to go down to strong contenders Spain 1-0 in their opening match of the eight-nation Rabo Trophy hockey tournament here today.
The Pool A encounter saw India being kept on the tenterhooks in the first half by a rampaging Spain who scored through Pol Amat in the 25th minute.
The Indians put up a much improved show after the lemon break but the Champions Trophy holders proved a tough nut to crack and held on to their slender lead to gain three points from the match played at the Wagner Stadium.
Earlier, Asian Games champions South Korea comprehensively beat England 5-1.
Jang Jong Hyun dominated the match with two goals (in 13th and 51st minutes) while Seo Jong Ho (33rd), Kang Seong Jung (35th) and Lee Sung Min (66th) added to Korea's tally. Ben Hawes converted a penalty stroke for England (22nd min).
Spain started the game with a purpose and caught the Indian defence napping on several occasions.
One such lapse by the Indians saw the Maurits Hendriks-coached team surge into lead when Amat slammed in a powerful shot from the right of the goal post after Ignace Tirkey lost the ball in the middle.
Ignace was not the only culprit as mis-trappings and poor possession marked India's show in the first half. Had it not been for a couple of good saves by goalkeeper Devesh Chauhan, they would have gone down by a bigger margin. However, the former Olympic champions regrouped after the break to dominate the proceedings, but in vain. Forward Deepak Thakur and Gagan Ajit Singh, playing in his first tournament after Olympics last August, built up a good move but were thwarted by an alert Spanish defence.
Luck also seemed to desert the Indians as they missed several chances to equalise, the most prominent being in the 62nd minute when Rajpal Singh's gallant effort was padded away by the rival goalkeeper and Ignace Tirkey failed to make most of the rebound, his reverse flick going over the bar.
India earned their second penalty corner of the match three minutes from the close but made a mess of the chance with skipper Dilip Tirkey shooting way off the mark.
India next play against Germany on Tuesday after a rest day tomorrow.
The Koreans dictated terms from the outset. They took the lead with a well directed dragflick from Jang Jong Hyun giving no chane for England goalkeeper Jon Ebsworth.

BELOVED TEAM
WE LOST TO GERMANY BY 2 GOAL TO ONE.I SAW THE MATCH ON FIELDHOCKEY TV.OUR TEAM PLAYED QUITE WELL,ESPECIALLY,KANWALPREET,HE SEEM VERY SOLID IN THE DEFENSE.DILIP TIRKEY IS STILL QUITE SHAKY,BUT WITH SOME MATCHES HE WILL REGAIN HIS NORMAL GAME.PRABDEEP IS VERY GOOD DEEP DEFENDER.ON THE WHOLE GIVEN TIME AND PATIENCE,THIS TEAM LOOKS SOLID.THE FORWARDS WERE LITTLE RUSTY.PLEASE DONT JUDGE THE TEAM JUST AFTER TWO GAMES.THIS TEAM SEEMS TO HAVE THE POTENTIAL.THOSE WHO ARE CRITICISING RAJINDER ARE NOT DOING JUSTIC TO HIM.JUST LOOK AT SPAIN,THEIR TEAM WASNT BUILT IN A DAY.
SO ,PLEASE GIVE OUR TEAM THE BENEFIT OF DOUBT,I THINK COME CHAMPION TROPHY THIS TEAM CAN WORK WONDERS.PLEASE HAVE PATIENCE,DELHI WASNT BUILT IN A DAY.

Harry,
Where have you been, you are writing like this is a new team!
It would be understandable if the Germans were apologizing that they didn't score more because theirs is a new team.
You got to be kidding! Harry, this indian side may be the most capped team in the tournament.
Can't wait to see how many more pc 'solid' kanwalpreet will conceed against pakistan. Hey not his fault he got chosen.
The 5 forwards are not rusty (doesnt Indian play 2-3-5?). They are just playing in the wrong positions. They would have been better employed elsewhere, like manning the video technology and then at least learn how to coordinate a play inside the circle.
Yet the Indian media will write about india's superstars. Harry sadest thing is you believe them.
why must we not criticize rajinder, he doesn't hesitate to criticize and threaten his players.....
delhi wasn't built in a day! dear, dear, harry, you are too kind... - sally

Harry??
Well well.. Delhi was not built in a day but yeah some of these players have been part of the senior squad for more than 4.5 years now.. if that is not good enuf to make u play consistent hockey at the highest level then i dunt kno wat is??
Trapping, basic passing under no pressure are skills even colleagues who play wid me on weekend posses...
Btw Prabhdeep and Devender(tinku) are total flops.. i cant understand how they can even make it to the probables.. they goof up time and time.. against spain they were horrendous... i am sure even the coach has seen that..
Kanwal is also a total disaster waiting to happen.. how can Mr.Harry call him solid.. against Germany he was found wanting for pace atleast 3 times .. not to exclude the no of PC's he gives away and also the defending during the PC's... come on .. Kanwal does not make it to the team anywayz...
The team looks SOLID.. which games have u been watching... against SPAIN we did not even enter the opposing half for abt 20 mins.. very SOlid i say...
No use being so optimistic Mr.Harry be REALISTIC rather.. and c d shortcomings.. this team is made up of many undeserving people.. who are there cause of the coach..
No doubt the results are showing.. and the coach has got the audacity to say that he can make it to finals.. dare i say...
Mr.Harry how many times have u seen Dilip play the way he did gainst germany.. viren is also not lookin committed enuf... reason???
I had earlier said India can escapre a tanning only if the other teams are understrength and that is d only reason the scorelines are respectable...!!

I saw both matches and I must say that the Gods of hockeyare not with India at the moment. They could have scored some brilliant goals but it just is not their time. The team looks good despite 2 defeats. Its been by the slenderest of margins.
Shani ka griha bhari hai. We will need to sharpen it up against Pakistan which should be a tough fight.
Good luck India. Have faith. The tide can turn. Just a little more aggressive patience in the circle.

Stop with the criticism!
C'mon fellas, Harry Singh is just voicing his feelings and he has a right to do so. He's not hurting any feelings and is not being rude. So let him be.
Also, stop criticizing and being negative. We must support the team at this juncture.
This is what you have and what you're going to get.
I've watched both matches. Both matches could have been won had the forward line delivered. the team played below expectation. There is a time criticism and it is not now.
