The Australian men's hockey team kept its hopes of winning the four-nation Hamburg Masters tournament alive with a 6-0 thrashing of hosts Germany overnight.

The Australians, beaten 3-1 by the Netherlands in their opening match of the tournament, were solid in defence and the Germans found scoring opportunities difficult to come by.

The Kookaburras gained the early advantage with a goal to Michael McCann in the third minute, before Ben Bishop made it 2-0 with the half-time break approaching.

Luke Doerner scored from a corner shot 10 minutes into the second half to extend Australia's advantage, which quickly became 4-0 when Grant Schubert found the back of the net.

Bishop grabbed his second with five minutes left on the clock before Brent Livermore completed the rout with a penalty goal on the stroke of full-time.

The Netherlands will win the tournament if they defeat or draw with Germany in their final game of the tournament, however a loss may open the door for Australia.

The Kookaburras take on Pakistan in their final game of the tournament tonight (8pm AEST).
