Johannesburg: Twenty-four teams will converge on the AB Jackson Astro in Pietermaritzburg for the Spar National hockey championships, which starts on Sunday, with 12 teams in the A Section and 12 in the B Section.

Defending champions Western Province will be fighting hard to retain their title, with strong opposition from Southern Gauteng, who have dominated the tournament since unification under the South African Hockey Association in 1992, winning nine times to Province's four.


National captain Lindsay Carlisle says these two teams are likely to continue their domination, although the South African Under-21 team could cause a few upsets. - Sapa
