Perhaps it was fate that landed me at a field hockey camp the summer going into my senior year of high school, but whatever it was changed my life.

My high school coach handed me a brochure one day along with a little piece of advice, ?Erin if you want to play field hockey in college, you have to go where the college coaches can see you play.? So, off I went that summer to a major university for a weeklong camp full of girls from around the country.

The spirit of the game overtook all of us that week as we were coached by college athletes and college coaches from around the world. I was able to experience a higher level of play on Astroturf while laughing and loving every minute of it! In the mornings we did fitness training and drill work, while the afternoons and evenings were spent playing games.

The most amazing evening happened three days into camp when the head field hockey coach at the university approached me. After seeing me play, she asked me to attend an official recruiting visit at the university. From there, I was offered a scholarship and ended-up playing division 1 field hockey, fulfilling my dream of the game.

My high school was not well known for its field hockey and therefore I would not have exposure to college coaches unless I had attended summer camp. That camp prepared me for what college athletics was all about, it gave me the chance to meet future teammates, and most importantly it gave me the ticket that carried me to success.

I encourage any young player to seek out and attend as many field hockey camps as possible. A summer field hockey camp changed my life, and it just might change yours!

Field Hockey
Hi Erin,
I am so proud of you, Hockey had always been one of my dreams, but
since I was raised in Africa they do not really pursue it, just local games. I really wish I could find a team closer to where I live in Long Island. Your story was great, and I wish you all the best and all the younger ones too and hope they could take this opportunity and make their dreams come true.

help!
I read your story and WOW amazing. I just need a little help! I am a Junior and only in grade 9...but this year I played for my High School's Senior Team, along with playing with the Juniors. I played for Zone teams and went to many camps as well. I love Field Hockey so much, I am on a Regional team, in hopes of being on the U16 B.C. Team...but I dont want to get sick of Field Hockey early in my playing career! Any suggestions?? dish_00@hotmail.com
