Notwithstanding the absence of several key players, India hockey coach Rajinder Singh today said the team had the potential to reach the final of the Rabo tournament in Holland involving eight top sides of the world.
Rajinder said the team had showed remarkable improvement in different areas during the three-week camp, which ended in Chandigarh yesterday.
"Reaching the final is a realistic target for us. The team has the skill and fitness to do that. It's just a matter of the team clicking," Rajinder said hours before the team's departure to Amstelveen.
India would be without several top players including goalkeeper Adrian D'Souza and drag-flicker Sandeep Singh, both of whom have been rested alongwith other members of the junior World Cup team.
"The Federation gave us a pool of 26 players and we have picked the best possible squad for the tournament. I can say that this combination is better than what we had for the Azlan Shah Cup.
"I am not thinking who is there or who is not. I have a squad and with it I will try to get the best result in the tournament," Rajinder said.
He said in the absence of Sandeep, Deedar Singh would be used as drag-flicker in Holland.
"Deedar has put in a lot of hard work in the training camp. He used to practice at least 300 times every day to master the art. We need to have players for such specialised tasks who can do the duty in the absence of the likes of Sandeep Singh," Rajinder said. The coach said the team would be keen not to repeat the mistakes it committed during the Azlan Shah tournament in Malaysia earlier this year when it finished fifth out of seven teams.
"We have given special emphasis on man to man marking and on general defence. The return of Gagan Ajit Singh and Kanwalpreet Singh has also given a boost to the team, which will benefit from their experience."
Skipper Dilip Tirkey said India were going to the tournament with a better forward line.
"We have some of the best forwards in the world. Gagan, Prabhjot (Singh), Deepak (Thakur) and Arjun (Halappa) are proven performers while Rajpal Singh did quite well in the Azlan Shah Cup," he said.
In the August 14 to 21 tournament, India have been pitted in Pool A with arch-rivals Pakistan, Champions Trophy winners Spain and World Champions Germany. Pool B has Olympic winners Australia, European powerhouses Holland, Asian Games holders Korea and England.
India will start their campaign on August 14 with a match against Spain.

Agree
This coach is better off shutting his mouth and doing his job first. This Indian senior team hardly inspires any confidence, though individual excellence does remain.
Rajinder Singh Jr will go the way of Rajinder Singh Sr for sure, given the useless IHF.

Oh dear. Another Indian coach making unrealistic predictions before a tournament.
The quotes AFTERWARDS are likely to be:
1. Forwards didn't 'click'
2. Defenders made 'schoolboy' errors
3. Midfield gave 'wrong' passes
4. We need to rectify a 'few grey areas'
But now he should keep quiet!

I think India's turn for winning a major trophy is not beyond the horizon. There has got to be a major shift in the way the present administration promotes the game. India need bigger. stronger and more fit junior players to eventually progress through the senior ranks. That is not happening quickly enough.
Square one: Hockey (the national sport) has to emulate cricket and football in general popularity. Talented school leavers must never be allowed to give up the game as they are doing presently in India. Hence, the talent pool is never large and the number of players generally in top competition is relatively minute compared to cricket and football. India should grow this sport. At present top English clubs can run upwards of twelve men's teams at various competitive levels. If every school leaving hockey player in India joins a club, India could easily run the biggest leagues in the world.
Rajinder this is what you would have to consider if India needs to be a winning finalist. Otherwise, we can only dream before every tournament.

No point in watching
Heart has broken so many times that now there is no point in watching hockey any more. The selection circus has to stop in India. Pleanty of talent is going waste. In every tournament team management touts to reach final and ends up getting first position from the bottm!! Enough of this joke, we need some serious hockey.

Guess what?
India have lost the first game to Spain 1-0 & guess what the coach'es comments are?
Check this report & compare with my earlier post!
http://www.rediff.com/sports/2005/aug/14hock1.htm
Why make silly predictions & why does he blame his players. That's hardly building trust with the players. But this coach is no different to the 20 or so before him.
I really hope India don't finish last!

WELL DONE SUKH
EVERY WORD AND COMMENT SUKH HAS WRITTEN ABOVE HAS BEEN USED BY OUR COACHES BEFORE GETTING SACKED. RAJINDER IS ONLY FOLLOWING THE SAME PATH ON HIS WAY OUT BEFORE GETTING SACKED.
IT APPEARS THAT THE LATEST STRATEGY OF GILL IS TO FALL BACK ON THE PUNJAB PLAYERS AND COACHES. HE HAS BEEN PROVED WRONG AGAIN.
I PRAY TO THE ALMIGHTY GOD TO DELIVER INDIAN HOCKEY FROM THE CLUTCHES OF GILL AND HIS CROONIES. ONLY DIVINE INTERVENTION CAN HELP IT APPEARS. STRIKE THEM DEAD IF YOU HAVE TO OH GOD, BUT PLEASE KEEP THEM AWAY.

I'm very sorry that my prediction came true.
Worse still, India lost to Germany as well. Will we lose all our matches? It is possible as Pakistan are next & then possibly England.
Although India's results have been rubbish for 3 decades- we still have coaches like Rajinder who make such silly comments when all the history & form of the players should tell him what the team is capable of.
What's most disheartening is the lack of any plan. There are never any innovations, the players can't trap properly, possession is lost all too easily etc...same errors time & again. Hopeless.

I like your list of excuses very much...let me add two more:
1) the referees cheated us
2) our older players were too tired from the Junior World Cup

to mr Andre information
there is not even one single player from from recently concluded jwc in this squad so no one is tired .
i think your mind must be very tired to give this type of bias opinions and drag us into umpiring topics again.
if umpires made a mistake then yes it was in jwc match between india and spain.
in present tournament in holland about umpiring .india was really lucky not to get too many penalty corners.there were some close calls for pc against india which were overlooked.(match against spain).even india was lucky to have pc in the final moment of the match which actually hit the indian foot player before hitting spanish player(spanish players protested the disision).if india would have converted the pc we would have drawn the match with spain.
but we indians dont like such umping mistakes understood Mr.ANDRE.
so dont talk nonsence.
RAJINDER HAD ONLY SAID
"the team had the POTENTIAL to reach the final of the Rabo tournament in Holland involving eight top sides of the world".

Predictions
To talk about predictions, I said first position from the bottom!! We lost the third game just now and are headed to that position. This time we lost to Pakistan. Excuses are just a cover up of all failures. Some serious work needs to be done.
Sukh is right, the same arguments and excuses offered every time. players are punished for dismal show, but what about officials and team management? who questions the team selection? I do not see any major news paper crying about not oncluding players that should be in the squad. Ban on Ganguly raised a storm but who cares for hockey!!!
