Pakistan’s first Super Hockey League, also featuring six top Indian players, will be played from September 8 to 18 under lights at the Hockey Club of Pakistan in Karachi, stated Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) secretary general Musarrat Ullah Khan during a news conference at Holiday Inn Hotel here on Tuesday. Also present on the occasion were federation’s selection committee chairman Akhtar Rasool and director marketing Naveed Haider.
Musarrat said India and Malaysia were the only two foreign teams invited by the PHF officially. “India have confirmed to send their top players while Malaysia regretted because their players are busy with prior commitments,” added the PHF official.
Musarrat said a wrong impression was given in the media that the players from Europe refused to take part in the league showing security concerns. “We did not extend invitation to the European players. “We are launching the league for the very first time and want to make sure that every thing goes well,” he maintained.
Musarrat said in all six teams would take part in the league. “The event will be contested on single league basis and on the pattern of Champions Trophy Hockey Tournament. Each match will be of 70 minutes duration with four halves. There will be two-and-a-half-minute break in each half.” He said a total of eighteen matches would be played and the entire event would be shown live on PTV. The participating teams have been named after four provinces, Islamabad and Northern Areas. Sindh Qalandars will be led by Ahmad Alam, Shan-e-Punjab by Muhammad Saqlian, Frontier Flacons by Rahim Khan, Baloch Lions by Muhammad Sarwar, Northern Cavaliers by Muhammad Nadeem ND and Capital Dynamos by Mudassar Ali Khan.
