V NARAYAN SWAMY

BANGALORE: Former India captain VJ Phillips wants the hockey selection committee to be an autonomous body that will brook no interference while choosing players to represent the country.

Phillips is appalled by the influence that Indian Hockey Federation President KPS Gill and secretary K Jothikumaran purportedly exert on the selection panel while picking teams and says it is best they stayed away, leaving the jobs to professionals.

"The office-bearers of the IHF will have to be barred from the exercise and I will advocate the intervention of the sports ministry to make this happen," said Phillips.

"Let the government form a selection committee of former Olympians, reputed coaches and their own representatives.

Merit will be the sole criterion. Of course, this committee will be part of IHF. Let this panel watch the players over a period of time before the choices are made. I am sure they will pick the right players because they will be held responsible for any debacle too."

Phillips, who captained India at the Buenos Aires World Cup in 1978, feels that the selection committee these days has very little in terms of choice as it is asked to pick the team from a very small core group. "It is the same set of players that we see over and over again. It requires no special talent or skill."

encourage and not discourage at the 11th hour
Dear VJP,

I may entirely agree with your valuable views on the selection procedure. However, I wonder was it an appropriate time to speak/criticise while the Indian team is about to leave for Holland for the Eight-Nation (Mini World Cup) from August 14 to 21. The 23-member Indian team left for Holland via New Delhi at the conclusion of the national coaching camp in Chandigarh.

This was the time to ENCOURAGE and not DISCOURAGE the team. Your comments at this moment may harm more than doing any thing to go the Indian team.

I pray you should have prayed for the success of the team. Of course, in your heart you may be praying but there is a saying 'if one is honest he should also look like to be honest.'
Pardon me if I have hurt your sentiments.
I have high regards for you.

Back seat driver....Jothikumaran
Yeh sala chamcha has been the bane of of Indian hockey for quite some time now. The first objective in cleanising Indian hockey is to get rid of characters like him.

Dear VJP,

Wrong time, wrong place. This system needed clean up and Operating System change prior to Y2K. Too long and too far. Olympians along with Gill and Jyothi have been the bane of Indian hockey. From the outside India doesn't have a work ethic that accepts responsibility seriously and it shows on face of your players and support staff irrespective of the selection procedures. However you guys have excellent BLAME TRANSFER PROTOCOLS (BTP). Try to change the wave pattern and the behavioral characteristics. Harness the innate capability with vigour. The future will be yours.

Its a flat world...plug and play!!!

Nice to be Nice
Hey people,

VJP is criticising the selection procedures not the players. VJP, I am guessing, doesn't get asked everyday or when it is the "right time to criticize" what he thinks. When Swamy asks you one fine day, you better speak up and tell Swamy. He may not ask you again, specially if all you say is something "nice" cos it is wrong time.

BUT by the way when is the right time to criticize the IHF selection procedures?

Before the selection?.... when we are praying for their wisdom, cos we think things will change, no no bhai give them a chance they will get it right.

During the selection? ...when it is behind closed doors

After the selection? ...when we are praying for the team's success, then we are supposed to say oh good they brought back kanwalpreet this will "strengthen" the team.

After we win? ok forget that, not gonna happen (sorry we are supposed to be positive , yeah right)

After we lose? ...oh yeah, still supposed to be positive, can't win everytime, you but but but we lose most matches anyhoooo.

And then there we are back at before the selection stage? and we pray again, How nice!

I am sorry me think there is nothing new in this team regarding the histroical weaknesses,so India's defence will be letting in goals, the mid-field will be on extended vacation, and the forwards will miss sitters, and wthen e will moan the lack of a drag flicker, and say that made the difference.

But we will come close close to win one game against the strongest team and lose in the last minute.... I pray I am wrong.

Balbir Singh and VJP I would like to hear after the tournament, if you watching the talent, who you thought should have been on this team....

GOOD SPIRIT GUYS
This has to be one of the most unified responses. Good job!
I've always said that we fans owe allegiance to our players! They need our support, they're good and need all our loyalty.
And I fully agree, Phillips is palying to the chavvani gallery. Cheap tricks and self-serving rhetoric.
Keep him shut.

Uknow, I'm go out on a limb and say that this team shall do a lot better than most skeptics think. The crucial game is against Spain, we've gotta win and when we do, we'll be palying the semis. Watch!

Thakur, Prabhjot, Hallapa have all played well below their potential. They need our support, now!

Guys get rid of Gill but you do not need Batra either. Get someone good and maybe Sahara can organise something because you do not need a Drunk Gill who does know what he is doing at FIH meetings - yes he was pissed as a fart and kept mumbling utter nonsense. Do not ask me how I know but this is Inside Info.

Get Mr Sahara to get you a good person but not Mr Batra, he is no better.

God Save Indian Hockey from likes of these people.

Personally, I do not care if India wins at Rabo bank because they should not show their hand to the World, it does not count in the Rankings.

Come on now....
Balbir, Cool, Hockeyman,

The players have support of all Indians including VJP, I am sure. The issue is not whether India should win or lose? Not even if Gill and Jyothi should be banished. Lets deal with the VJP's suggestion, not the distractions and conspiracy theories.

The issue is should the selectors be an autonomous body or not? Agree or disagree?

Should their pay (if paid at all) be made commensurate to Inda's win/loss record? How many domestic tournaments they have witnessed? How should the panel be composed? why not include foreign consultants etc.? Why wouldn't Sahara pressure for an accountable approach? Could their sponsorship be based in part on win/loss record?

How can they instead be made accountable....I know where I stand. Lets talk about that people.
