A scheduled five match series between the New Zealand University council and the national hockey teams was called off a week before the visitors were to arrive.

Fiji Hockey Federation spokesperson Kevin Fraser confirmed yesterday that the New Zealand University council selection side would not be playing in Fiji.

"My understanding is that the New Zealand Hockey Federation had sought clarification from its foreign affairs office and other offices on whether it is safe to travel to Fiji," he said.

"This is because New Zealand had also placed a travel advisory alert because of tension surrounding the Reconciliation Bill," he said.

The touring New Zealand University council selection side was supposed to play five matches, three of which will be against the national teams and two against the A sides.

However, Fraser confirmed Fiji would be hosting the Oceania World Cup qualifiers in November.

"We will be meeting with Oceania representatives here in Suva this week to finalise details," he said.
