FEW people in Dublin will be unaware that the European Nations Cup tournament is coming to town next week.

It's all part of a new marketing strategy for both the men's and women's game introduced by the IHA's Chief Executive Paul Varian.

Part of it involves a massive billboard campaign which has used larger than life size models in the shape of Linda Caulfield and Jenny Burke.

The Hermes duo, both capped more than 100 times, appear on giant posters strategically placed at more than 20 locations around Dublin. Even commuters on the Belfast-Dublin train couldn't miss them as Connolly Station is one of the chosen venues.

It's a far cry from the days when, if you were lucky, a yellow AA sign would be all that was used to 'promote' a tournament.

Hockey's equivalent of the IFA's Howard Wells certainly means business.

The money's rolling in through sponsorship with the Republic's Electricity suppliers, ESB, on board specifically for the women's game.

Supermarket giants Tesco are secondary sponsors of the Europeans which kick off when Ireland face France a week today.

And last week a kit sponsorship deal with Canterbury was announced. Replica kits will shortly be on sale.

Relations with the press and other media have also improved.

Now all we need is two teams to match as both the men and women put the final touches to their preparations for their Euro bids in Dublin and Rome.

Hockey Ranking in Ireland
What is the ranking for hockey in Ireland?
In terms of popularity.... Is it in the top 5 sport there?

Cheers

Great to see 2 articles in the examiner today about Creggie and Jennie Burke. Well done Paul Varian and the IHA in marketing the game well.

no way is it top 5 which would probably be in no particular order, football, rugby, hurling, geilic football and something like athletics or tennis or swimming or boxing all of which are ahead of hockey i'd say. itself and cricket are about as popular as eachother in the mens game.

For women it probably would be one of the more played sports because alot of secondary girls schools play hockey.

Hockey Ranking in Ireland
As far as I know hockey is the largest women's sport in Ireland (more women/girls play hockey than any other sport), different for the mens where GAA, rugby and soccer would be the most popular sports.

I would say hockey has lost ground in recent years. The 'chicks with sticks' campaign by camogie a few years back certainly drew a lot of attention and from a player number perspective it has gone further ahead of hockey. Camogie struggles in Dublin but it is way ahead down the country.

Basketball too has marketed itself well in the past ten years and is now more widely spread than hockey - certainly in the South. The immigration from eastern Europe will provide a big boost to basketball in the future.

But it is not all about numbers playing. Take rugby. On a participant level it is really struggling. But look at the publicity it still gets.

The IHA should introduce something for the summer time like the tag rugby which has been very popular. That could boost the numbers playing hockey. Also the could get in contact with pple running summer camps and offer to take groups for hockey sessions. But dat obviously might not work.

it's marvellous what new young blood can do - great credit to Varian. He has done more in 6 months than what any 5 of the old "suits" or "blazers" did collectively over 5 years. Previously " marketing" had soley the Odlums sponsorship to show for 3 years effort. The whole lot of the rest of them should be retired to Rathlin or somewhere equally obscure-
