The Malaysian development team down for the four-nation hockey meet in Singapore from Aug 25-28 will open their campaign against Asian Games champions South Korea at the Delta Hockey Stadium.

The other teams in the tournament are Hong Kong and Singapore. Malaysia, due to the ongoing Malaysia Hockey League, are unable to send their full national team for the meet.

The Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) have picked national junior coach Sarjit Singh to helm the team and he will only be able to pick players who are not involved in the MHL. The preliminary round of the MHL will end on Aug 26.

Sarjit said yesterday that they would leave on Aug 22 and have two days of training in Singapore before the tournament starts.

“I do not know the composition of the team yet. We will have to wait and see which players are available and it is likely that we will have a number of juniors in the squad,” said Sarjit.

Sarjit said that it would be up to the selection committee to approve the names but felt that since it is a development squad the players will benefit from the experience.

The women's national team will also be going to Singapore, as they too will be involved in a four-nation meet involving hosts Singapore, India and South Korea.

The women will also open against their Korean counterparts on Aug 26 and then play India and Singapore respectively over the next two days.

Women's team coach C. R. Kumar said that the tournament is part of their long-term preparations for the Asian Games challenge next year.

“It is good that the team is now being invited for tournaments and this will help the players gain valuable experience. We have a young side and this tournament will allow us to gauge our standard against the two top Asian sides, Korea and India. In a recent outing in South Korea in June we lost heavily to both,” said Kumar.

The women's team have 21 players in camp and three will be dropped for the meet. Kumar said they might shift their training base to Johor from Aug 14 and train there for a week before the meet.

not many to choose from
Who will the malaysians pick - ten teams playing MHL means that at least 120 of their best players wont be there. Will it be the U18 team that goes down to Singapore?

Not yet there
At least 4 of the HK Best are still working in HK. U'll only see a team that can beat SGP, perhaps one that can trouble MYS worst. There's yet a lot more that is missing in the HK side
