Canada got the win today and clearly deserved it by putting in an excellent hard working performance on a warm humid afternoon. Canada started strongly with Scott Sandison forcing an early circle penetration. In the 4th minute Pete Short, Dave Jameson combined well to set up Connor Grimes who just failed to touch in the final pass. Then totally against an early run of play Poland scored following a neat run in by Poland's captain, beating two defenders before slotting the ball past Michael Mahood. Canada continued to press and Dave Jameson went close in the 6th minute and then Mike Lee diving nearly touched in a cross from the right in the 9th minute. It remained all Canada as two chances fell to Connor Grimes in the 11th and 14th minutes but on both occasions the goalkeeper saved well. Canada won their only penalty corner of the game in the 17th minute, the initial shot was well saved and then Rob Short was inches wide with a follow up reverse stick shot. Poland had a good! chance in the 20th minute after a defensive turnover but Mike Mahood saved well. In the 22nd minute Mike Lee was heavily tackled and obstructed as he forced his way into the top of the circle. Penalty Stroke. Wayne Fernandes coolly converted. Canada now poured on the pressure and several more good chances were created before half time.
The second half started as the first had ended with Canada continuing to press. Wayne Fernandes put through a great long pass to Mike Lee who was brought down as he shot, the goalkeeper saved and play went on! Canada's defence was tested from time to time but always looked solid and composed. Poland had two penalty corners in the 53rd and 57th minutes both being cleared away successfully. In the 62nd minute Canada went ahead with a beautiful goal from Philip Wright who dived to send his shot into the roof of the net following a great cross from brother Anthony who was overlapping in attack on the left. There followed a great Wright celebration! Mike Mahood was forced to make a key save in the 69th minute as Poland fought to get back on terms, but Canada held on for a very well deserved win. The Team travels to Belgium tomorrow, but will definitely savour a well earned win tonight. All substitutes played except Matt Peck. Paul Wettlaufer only managed to play for 10minutes as! he continues to struggle with an injury.
