The Australian men's hockey team leaves for Europe tomorrow to take on the world's top nations and prepare for the Commonwealth Games.
The Kookaburra's match against Germany is expected to be the highlight of their campaign.
The rivalry between Australia and Germany is so fierce they cannot even agree on who deserves the title of world number one.
"If you ask most of the guys in the Kookaburras we'd say we're number one," Australian striker Andrew Smith said.
While Germany won the last World Cup, the Australians are the Olympic champions, winning gold in Athens.
"It's always a tough fight against Germany. We're looking forward to getting into it and the more the merrier in the lead-up to the Commonwealth Games," Kookaburras striker Travis Brooks said.
The Kookaburras will be aiming for their third consecutive Commonwealth gold next year and a win at home could be just what the game in Australia needs.
"Hopefully when the Commonwealth Games are on we get some really good exposure and it'll really take off," Smith said
While hockey is a popular sport to play in Australia, it is a game few will go along to watch.
And despite their success, the Kookaburras are lacking the financial clout of some of their overseas competitors.
"I think it's exposure, with success comes more exposure," Australian goal-keeper Stephen Mowlam said.
Hockey is played professionally overseas, filling grandstands in India and Europe, and the Kookaburras hope the same could happen in Australia.
"It's got the potential to get there because it's a spectacle to watch," Mowlam said.
But for now, playing against professional teams means making sacrifices.
"The days are long, you start at 5.30am and finish at eight o'clock at night," Mowlam added.
But with a third Commonwealth gold in their sights, the Kookaburras could also be making history.
"We want to create a bit of a dynasty for hockey so that's our goal," Mowlam said.

McCann Clan?
Hey Flat Nose Skinny Boy are you a member of the McCann clan, or are you just a fan?
He is a champion player, but his presence alone isn't enough to guarantee victory. Maybe you should've added that George, Dwyer, Mowlam, Livermore, Hammond etc etc are all there as well
I vote Mowlam for next Aussie skipper, anyone agree?

Re: Easy Tiger
I can def see the Gimp as a possible, but I don't think it'll happen. There's not a real lot separating goalkeepers at that level. Whoever is in form gets the game. If the greatman was to have an off game… where would that leave him as el capitaine? Also, what is made of the second goalkeeper then?
Great bloke, good leader, but a goalkeeper cannot captain the AUSTRALIAN team...other teams YES, Australia NO!

Gimp
Good points Megsy!
In which case I vote they stick with a leadership group rather than a nominated captain.

asw alot of u may know it would b very dangerous 2 have our number one keeper as captain, how would we go in a case where the captain is sent off and our back-up keeper gets hurt??? for this reason i elieve the leadership group is a great idea...... p.s good luck liver's on ur 200th, hope playing inner won't tamper your game. id like to thank livers and dwyer for all you've taught me, its much appretiated

Calm down Tiger! A goalie for captain, you've been hit on the head too many times. I'm not a member of the McCann clan, in fact I don't like cockroaches at all. I just notice how much better the Aussies play when he's on the field. He is smart, strong, fit and a winner.

Doolz, did the lessons you learn have anything to do with hockey.
P.S. McCann is boring, should drink more if he wants to be a real aussie sporting hero.

Kookaburra's Captaincy
I think Stephen Mowlam would make a great Aussie captain. Of course this is a completely unbiased opinion.

Goalie for captain
I agree, Stephan Mowlam would make a great captain. being a goalie myself, i think he is an inspiration, and after getting to meet him in the airport the other day, I now feel he is more inspiring than ever.
