European players shun Super Hockey League There are 28 comments on this articlex28

Before it could kick off, the much-hyped Super Hockey League (SHL) lost much of its sheen with the European players giving it a collective thumb down because of security concerns.

The snub comes at a time when cricket administrators in the country struggles to convince visiting teams that Pakistan was safe enough to host them.

Talking to APP, Pakistan Hocket Federation (PHF) Director Marketing Naveed Haider Khan informed that the players from, Holland, Germany and Belgium, who were invited to play in the SHL -- a Pakistani version of India's Premier Hockey League -- had decided to skip the event owing to security apprehensions.

PHF now banks on players from India and Malaysia to add glamour to the event which is slated for September 8-18 in Karachi.

"It's unfortunate that European players have declined to feature in the competition on security concerns which we believe is not fair as a number of top hockey and other sports events were organised recently in Karachi," Khan said.

"Now India and Malaysia each will send their top six players and one player from each country will be put in the six participating teams to make them equally balanced and attractive" he informed.

Like the PHL in India, SHL would feature six teams with catchy names -- Shan-e-Punjab, Sindh Qalanders, Baloch Lion, Frontier Falcon, Northern Cavalier and Capital Dynamos.

Admitting the budget would be a big factor while inviting top players from India and Pakistan, the PHF official said,"but we are fully committed to make this show a big success and we'll be doing our best to get the best foreign players for the league."

He said the SHL launching ceremony would be held here in the first week of August.

The national selection committee had been entrusted with the job of deciding on the team composition, he said.

Why don't the SHL and PHL, 2 stupid leagues, join to make one good one......You can play these things in 1 venue over 2 weeks!!! Its not a League, that's a tournament!!!

Don't Believe This
I don't buy this story. The recent Indian league was supposedly studded with international stars but Juan Escarre was the only European of note there. I suspect that the logistics have meant that attracting European talent is difficult-nothing to do with security. It's a good way to deflect attention away from botched organistion though...

home and away basis
it will be better if the league is conducted on home and away basis rather than at one place. each team plays the other team twice, once at each other,s home ground. this is the main crowd puller in european soccer leagues.

Make A Start
Kudos to PHF for at least attempting to make a beginning in the right direction with the SHL. Even though India began with the PHL this January at Hyderabad, I am sure, despite the teething problems, it will be a success at Karachi in September. Doesn't matter if the Europeans cannot come this time (I do not buy the security reasons), but am sure they will be there the next time. The leagues in Europe have commenced already.
These leagues are good for the sport in Pakistan and India and will hopefully get the crowds back, particularly under floodlights.
So let the SHL begin even though with 10 odd overseas players from India and Malaysia.

There seem to be a lot of more obvious reasons than the security concerns - e.g. when did they ask the European players to join? Last month? Well, that's a little late. They all probably already had agreements with their club teams.

Also, the European Nations Cup in Leipzig, where all the players they would've asked play, ends on September 4th - maybe the athletes weren't that keen on adding another item immediately after preparing extensively for the Europeans, than playing 5 matches in 7 days.

what an excuse !
i dont understand why some countries making an issue about security concerns? are other places safe enough? while having olympics qualifiers spain had a real bad bombing , but all countries were patient and stayed till the tournament finishes off ? recently in london ,they had tragic incidents ,which will host 2012 olympics ,do theyhave enough security measures? my sympathies are with all those who suffered ,the only reason i pointed out is ,all countries always raise an issue going over south asia?
Pakistan hold cricket series successfully and also 2004 CT at lahore , ......
i hope super hockey league will be a success and players should think of making it a mega event???????

GOOD
Congrats to PHF to start this league. Better late than never.
Who are the foreign players coming... will Pillai and Dalip Tirkey there ?
PHF must get PTV and some satellite sports chanel for the live coverage to make the event a grand success.

PHL: I really dont think two countries that have never seen eye to eye could possibly combine such leagues - it's just not going to happen. The history just says it all.

Even if the european players have decided not to play, it's good to see major events in Pakistan or India, lets hope this encourages youngsters to watch and play. I don't see security as an excuse, why not just say, sorry but we're not interested or we're busy. If Pakistan could successfully host a cricket test match between Pakistan - India they could host any event without worry.

re: home and away basis
I agree to dr.ijaz ahmad that games should be played on home and away basis rather than one location; which was one bad aspect of the PHL. Apart from Pakistan having two of the greatest stadiums in world hockey (Lahore & Karachi) it also has excellent stadiums in other cities with good spectator draw.

Euro Nations Cup
No one seems to have read Lizzie's comments re Euro Nations Cup. Couple that with Euro leagues and it is little wonder the players are not coming, irrespective of any security concerns. Perhaps next year the PHF can plan it better so that the largest possible pool of players will be available.

Fund Shortage
PHF possibly cannot hold this SHL on a home and away basis due to financial constraints. Also it is a short league, unlike PHL in India.
Maybe they get more sponsorships and money next time for a double header in different towns.

Telecast
Good to note that Ten Sports will telecast the SHL.
They are indeed doing a yeoman service for us hockey buffs in the sub continent.
They are indeed the no. 1 sports channel, particularly for hockey. They will also show us the Mini World Cup live from Holland.
Keep it up Ten.....

Sohail
I will be very surprised if Sohail Abbas will be released by his Dutch cluHC Rotterdam for the SHL. Also Wasim Ahmad who also plays for the same team. I think also that money will be a key factor for Sohail. He will never play ordinarily unless is is getting good money.
My information is that the star Dutch dragficker Taekma has been signed up for 75,000 Euro for 2005-06. Sohail definitely will be around this. Also when he says retired from representing Pakistan, he is free to play club hockey for as long as he is fit and he wishes. No need for permissions from PHF.
Therefore he'll be back in India for the PHL as he was the highest paid player last time, getting 7000 US$ for a month and a free honeymoon with his wife to boot, at Hyderabad Deccan.

What a Pity if no Sohail
It will be very unfortunate if Sohail is not available for SHL. I think the PHF authorities may just include his name in the Sind Qalanders Team.
But the PHF Secy Gen. Mussarat has said that they will not recall Sohail. Maybe they should give him extra money to play.
I think India gave Rs One lac to six or seven of their senior players including Dhanraj Pillay, Tirkey, Gagan, Rasquinha, Thakur etc. for the PHL. Also the total prize money was 7.1 million, with the winning team Hyderabad Sultans getting 3 million. No doubt PHL was a huge success.
What are the PHF plans ? They are yet to announce.

Timing
Timing and correct Planning are the key to the success. Unfortunately there is total darkness on the SHL front. We only know the dates, as it commences on 8 Sept at Karachi.

There should have been some hype about it as there is just a month to go. There should have been some logo or mascot release like the PHL done by ESPN Star Sports. After all, you want some glamour around so that the common man talks something on hockey at least.

If Ten Sports are telecasting the event, then they should air their promos immediately, like ESPN did. The timing is most crucial.

We do not know which Indian players will be there at Karachi. With Chennai hosting the CT 2005, it may become difficult to release the top players. And in late September India are hosting Malaysia in a 5 Test series.

Indian players
Actually the IHF should release the players for the short SHL at Karachi.

In any case the India team will take a break upon their return from Amstelveen on 22nd August.

The India Malaysia series starts only on 24th September at Chennai. The Indian players will still have nearly one week in between the end of SHL and the Test series.

If IHF do not release their players, then maybe PHF won't send the Pakistanis for the next edition of PHL. And remenber, there were ten of them last time, and all top stars like Sohail, Waseem Ahmad, Ahmad Alam, Saqlain, Dilawar, Mudassar etc.

That will certainly rob the PHL much sheen as not more than 3-4 Europeans will show up for that. Escarre was the only one last time and that too because he was pushed by his coach Maurits Hendriks. No other Spanish player was interested, because they found the money too less.

The same goes for the players from Germany and Holland. Imagine if Taekema can get 75000 Euros as his proessional fee, then any other international player from these countries will be getting a minimum of 20000 to 25000 Euros.

With this figure they won't even look at the pittance offered by SHL or PHL.

75k for Taekema? Get real guys...even if the money was real the chances of him fitting it in with his international commitments are very small. Funny thing about money-people always quote figures they heard from a friend who knows a guy who they met who is best friends with...etc

Hey Jimbob.. reading ur posts it seems ur such a loser and is not very pleased with the indea of european players playing in the Asian leagues..
Dude we have to start somewhere and PHL has done that and done it great!!
Do u kno how much time and money has ESPN spent on the PHL.. the idea has been concieved after ,ore than 3.5 years of planning.. beleive me Jim the money spent is also big.. jst take the clothin for eg.. only the jerseys for all the players.. tier I and II have cost abt 1.4 -1.5 crore Indian rupees... and this is big money for some1 to invest in Indian Hockey..
Frankly who cares if the europeans come or not.. v kno our Rehans, SOhail, VIrens, Gagan's ... so big deal...
V have stars in our sub-continebnt and will prefer them to the european big shots..

But ur attitude and deriding of the PHL and SHL is nonsense..

@jharkhand

P.S: news is that the PHL cud be held in Mumbai for 2006. Lets wait and watch

This is starting to sound like a gossip column. Juan Escarre took part in the PHL 2005 out of free will and being part of a good, new experience and not ''pushed'' by anybody. And Taeke's contract is not for 75 000 euros!!
