COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - USA Field Hockey has announced its roster for the Women's Junior World Cup, Sept. 14-25 in Santiago, Chile.
Selected during USA Field Hockey's Elite Team Trials, July 21-24 at Penn State Univ., the U.S. team of under-21 athletes will enter the 16-team Junior World Cup as the No. 9 seed. The USA will begin play in Pool A with top-seeded The Netherlands, No. 8 England and No. 16 Zimbabwe.
Of the 18 athletes selected to the Junior World Cup team, 15 competed on the U.S. team that placed second at the Junior Pan American Championships in March in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The team placed second at the event to secure the USA a spot in the Junior World Cup.
The U.S. team features three players coming off U.S. senior team appearances at the Rabobank Champions Challenge held earlier in July in Virginia Beach. Junior World Cup selections Lauren Crandall (Doyelstown, Pa.), Lauren Powley (Mountaintop, Pa.) and Katie O'Donnell (Blue Bell, Pa.) played key roles in the USA's fifth place finish at the international event. Crandall and Powley started all six games for the USA senior team while 16-year-old O'Donnell scored a goal in the USA's 5-3 win over Spain in the tournament's 5th/6th place game.
Coached by two-time Olympian and current Univ. of Michigan assistant coach Tracey Fuchs, the USA team also includes goalkeepers Katherine Blair (Louisville, Ky./Virginia) and Brianna O'Donnell (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton HS) in addition to field players Laree Beans (Allentown, Pa./North Carolina), Rachel Dawson (Berlin, N.J./North Carolina), Lauren Ehrlichman (Wellesley, Mass./Princeton), Katie Evans (Newtown Square, Pa./Delaware), Katelyn Falgowski (Landenberg, Pa./St. Marks HS), Katie Grant (Lehighton, Pa./Duke), Lori Hillman (Gibbsboro, N.J./Michigan), Michelle Kasold (Chapell Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill East), Mia Link (Jenkintown, Pa./Virginia), Cara-Lynn Lopresti (San Diego, Calif./Duke), Heather Schnepf (Medford Lakes, N.H./Iowa), Amy Stopford (Hillsborough, N.C.)/Duke) and Jamie Whitten (Maidens, Va./Wake Forest).
The fall scheduling of the Junior World Cup means the U.S. athletes will miss a portion of their collegiate or high school seasons prompting a generous move from the coaches to allow the athletes to participate and continue the development of the U.S. national team.
The USA has qualified for the quadrennial event in three of the four previous editions of the Junior World Cup. The USA's best finish was a 10th place showing in 1989. The USA placed 12th in 1997 and 14th in 2001.
Korea is the defending Junior World Cup champion after winning the event in Buenos Aires in 2001.

To all my peers who released their players to play on this team
To all my peers that did not release their players to play on this team.... you should be ashamed of yourselves. There are players out there that would be on this team had their College Coaches let them be. For College Coaches to deprive someone of a once in a lifetime opportunity..... as I said earlier, you should be ashamed of yourselves. USA Field Hockey may have problems, it may not be the best organisation in the world, you may not even support it..... But we arent going to get better as a Nation if we dont support it.
Congratulations to all those who made the team, most of us support you and want to see you do well. To those players who were told they couldnt go..... There are a lot of us who feel very sorry for you. To the recruits and parents who have aspirations to play at the highet level and are looking at schools that didnt allow theur players to go... ask yourself id this where I should really be going?

i do not know of any coaches who refused to release any players to play. I think once again there is an agenda here ....trying to protect the reputation of a player who just didn't make the team and blaming it on the coaches Every girl selected had to work hard to be on this team and Everyone who put in the effort... including the effort of getting both their coaches and academic professors to approve this trip has been included on the team. Some of them have gone so far as to red shirt or take summer courses just to be included. Trust me no one who truly made the effort to represent our country was denied the opportunity. We are very proud of the persistance, effort and sacrifices of these girls. For once, lets just congratulate and praise them! If you had a kid who really wanted to be there... they would have found a way just like these 18 did! Again...you are insinuating that these girls are not the top selections. It is about time you get off your high horse and face the facts. Maybe the girls or I am assuming one girl who you keep talking about just didn't have the motivation and persistance to persuade her advisors and coaches Congratulations U-21 World Cup Team. You are the best and will do a great job representing our country.

To Fed Up.....
Sorry to dissapoint you but what I said earlier is true. I am not trying to protect any player, I have no idea who you are referring to. All I know is that there are at least three College Coaches out there who refused to allow their kids to go. There were kids who made those sacrifices, persisted all the way, put in the effort and were bluntly told by their coaches that they were not allowed to attend due to College games. I am not trying to take anythign away from any of the players that made this team, I am merely stating a fact. I am not insinuating that these kids are not the best available, I am not trying to take anythign away from this team. I am trying to get certain college coaches to realise that without their support this country is going nowhere. We can all sit and listen to Terry, Lee etc in January and then chat in the bar afterwards about how its a great step forward..... but guess what..... actions speak louder than words.

Name the coaches and programs - not the players. Any coach who wouldn't let a player go to this event should be embarrassed. And spare me the "my job depends on my team's performance" speech. Name the last coach fired for poor performance at a Div 1 school.
So who are the coaches?

Again, only two kids who went through the entire process pulled out... of their own free will. They made the choice....not their coaches. The others were not offered spots ahead of the girls on the team now. If you are refering to the few who may have expressed an interest at the eleventh hour and just expected to be put on the team... well that would have been totally unfair to the kids who had already "paid their dues" as welll. So I respect those coaches ...if indeed that is the case for not releasing them. Fifteen out of the 18 players selected to the current team have been trying out for over two years to make this team. They are the ones who put the time and effort into every aspect of the process. I have no idea who you think these three girls are who didn't get there chance. They certainly weren't in Chile in December when no coach told a player what they could do over Christmas break! And they sure weren't at all the other trials! Again the kids who earned a spot on the team are on the team!

If you want us to know which college coaches to boycot then please list their names as obviously you are the only one who knows this to be a fact! I doubt you will. This way you can keep us wondering who was better than the girls on the team. Again I suggest YOU support the program instead of undermining it!

it's a personal decision...
as a player I have heard rumors about different coaches not supporting the event because it is during "their" season. but not supporting it and not letting them go are two totally different things. luckily, i have the support of my coaches but as much respect as i have for them, if they told me they didn't want me to go, I would still go. this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for most of us. only two girls on the team have the chance to experience this twice and they are so lucky. but anyways, i have heard comments from the girls and I feel bad that they had to go through the dilemma of having to choose. coaches shouldn't put that much stress on their girls to decide whether they want to represent their school or their COUNTRY!!! (esp. when most of the top division 1 coaches played US hockey). i feel though like this is a personal choice that the girls had to make; whether they wanted to miss the school, college hockey, ect. it was up to them. i personally don't want to point the finger though and that's why i am not saying names. we are all not five years old so we shouldn't act like we are. i just hope everyone in the end is out there to cheer us on because I believe that even though we may be the underdogs in a competition like this....we can do anything we set our minds to.

Let's just assume that this is true, although I expect 'College Coach' has some sort of hidden agenda here, but so what if other coaches don't want to release their players! Of course they're not going to want their best players to miss games, where winning or losing could possibly cost them their jobs, but certainly their reputations & prospects of getting a better job if they lose those games that the girls are away for...
Not to mention that the USA will probably lose all of their games so it's not like they even have a chance of winning - remember it's not the taking part that matters, it's the winning!!!

To college coach
I am a bit confused. You say your reason for posting this was to make parents and players aware of the unjustices of a few coaches, but yet I see you have still not released their names. If that was your only objective why have you not responded to three requests to do so. How are we supposed to ask ourselves if this is where we should be going if we don't no where that is? Seems to me without this info your post was pointless.

Heard this rumour as well...
I live in Vancouver, in Canada. And I have also heard these such rumours. I have no idea who these coaches are or from what school but I have heard from Canadian Jr. Nat players that play in the NCAA the same story. And I know that the jr. nat girls here in Canada who play in the NCAA can not join the Canadian team down in Chile prior to the Jr. World cup because of their college team commitments. So just wondering if this rumour may be true...anyone else know anything about it??

Not about to....
Im not going to name names on here. To Confused - If you are visiting a College Coach, ask them if they would release your daughter(s) to play at such an event during the season. You'll soon get your answer. If the answer is no and your daughter(s) have aspirations to play at that higher level then I suggest you look elsewhere.
As for having a hidden agenda, you will just have to take my word for it that I dont. I have nothing to gain from posting on here. I think I am actually in the minority in that fact that I wholeheartedly support USA Field Hockey and what they are trying to do.
Field Hockey in the USA needs to change. Basically the point I am trying to make is that a lot of college coaches need to realise that they need USFHA more than USFHA needs them. If we all got together behind USFHA and helped..... well I wonder how much the game might improve.
To the players who made the U21 team, congratulations. I wish you all the success in the world at the tournament......see you there.

WJWC bad timing for US team
Understandably, the world of field hockey does not revolve around the NCAA. Nonetheless, the timing for this tournament is unfortunate for the USA team, as their preparation time is greatly compromised by the players' college commitments (Canada's as well). Beyond hockey, the players cannot afford to miss any extra class time, so I do not fault the coaches for their decision to limit their players' pre-tournament time off. As a supporter of US Hockey, I also applaud the college coaches who gave permission for their players to attend the WJWC. Hopefully, the players' absences will not have a significant effect on their college team's post-season chances. Their able teammates will just have to step up to the challenge. At least in the case of the ACC, each team will be playing without key contributors so it may balance out. It is my understanding that the girls who did not attend tryouts chose not to play US field hockey. I think the selectors did a good job choosing a strong team for the competition from the pool that was available. I wish these great girls much success in Chile. GO USA!

I congratulate the coaches that know that the honor that goes with playing on a USA team usurps the privilege of having those same athletes on their team, giving them the honor is proof positive that they appreciate their student athletes 100% for who they are and how they play, it takes incredible determination and hard work to make either team.
