TOP ZIMBABWE hockey administrator Pixie Salem is among the two umpires from the continent to officiate at the Women Junior World Championships to be held in Chile, from 14-25 September, StandardSport has learnt.

Salem's exploits on the African continent have been noted by the sport's governing body, the International Federation of Hockey. He will officiate as a judge while South Africa's Corrine Cornelius goes to the showcase as an umpire.

Salem is a popular hockey administrator who organised a tournament for children in Bulawayo and Harare last May. The tourney in Harare had about 200 girls (Under-9, 12 and 19) and around 300 boys, while the Bulawayo event had about 250 children (under 12).

The tournaments are held every year and are targeted to coincide with the start of the schools field season. In Zimbabwe, junior hockey is only upheld through the schools system.

Salem is set to travel with the 18-member Zimbabwe Under-21 women's team for the fifth Junior World Cup Championships.

Zimbabwe are in Pool A, which includes England, the Netherlands and the United States, at the 16-team tournament.

South Africa, who are the only other African country at the championships, are in Group B together with Germany, India and Canada.

Coach Kumbirai Mundangepfupfu's girls won their ticket to the junior global showpiece after finishing as runners-up to hosts South Africa at the 2004 African Cup of Nations finals.

progression
i am really happy that the under 21 womens team is going to chile . i hope it is a successful tournament for them and i hope they can learn from it and go back to zimbabwe and relate to other players what international hockey requires, and therefore improve the management as well as the development procedures in the country, as i know that the sport is dying in zimbabwe.

go zim
so glad the girls finally made it to chile. i really hope that the time and money that has been invested in the girls will be put to good use and that despite the results thus far the girls will hold their heads high and learn something from this tournamant. hockey in zim at the moment is largely dependant on the younger generation as a lot of the senior players are either not playing or are now living in other countries. we need to work hard on monitoring foreign based players as i believe that there is a lot of talent that is eligible to play in national colours but are not playing simply because they are in foreign countries. remember that chile twins that play in America but are playing for their country in this tournament.we are proud of you girls and remeber that you represent all of us hockey players and lovers of the sport.
