The 2005 World Games indoor hockey competition starts in Duisburg tomorrow, with home team Germany the hot favourites to claim the men’s and women’s crowns.
Indoor hockey is appearing at the World Games for the first time (as an invitational sport), with the tournament to be played over three days at Rhein-Ruhr-Halle. Four countries will contest competition, with teams playing each other once before the top two clash in the final.
The German men, are the current Indoor world champions, have won all 11 European Championships and have never lost an international match indoors.
The justifiably start the competition as clear favourites with the tournament also comprising Switzerland, who finished fourth at the 2003 Indoor World Cup, Canada (sixth) and the Czech Republic (eighth).
Germany are also the reigning world indoor champions and are expected to dominate the women’s competition. Their most dangerous rivals should be the Czech Republic, who finished fourth at the Indoor World Cup. The other teams in the women’s competition are Belarus (fifth in Leipzig) and Lithuania (sixth).
