CELTIC CUP

A LAST ditch equaliser denied Ireland men victory in their Celtic Cup opener with Wales in Edinburgh yesterday.

There was just seven minutes left on the clock when Oliver Cooper rifled home a penalty corner past Wesley Bateman to leave the final score 1-1.

Ireland carved out enough chances to win the game but a combination of wayward finishing and good goalkeeping proved to be their downfall.

Steven Redpath, son of former Great Britain and Ireland legend Jenny, made his debut at senior international level and it should have been a winning one.

Phelie Maguire broke the deadlock on 14 minutes when he unleashed a fierce shot into the corner of the net.

Eleven minutes before the break Brian Waring fired narrowly over the bar; in the 50th minute David Hobbs was unlucky to see his shot strike the post; and then Banbridge star Eugene Magee was denied.

With the clock ticking down Oliver Cooper grabbed the Welsh equaliser, but having used many of the youngr playres, this augurs well for September's Europeans.

Redpath
I don't know Stephen Redpath but I do know that nobody's mother gets them onto a team to play international hockey. How niave or stupid can you get???? I am staggered that you could even think this, let alone write it.

Are you suggesting that he was selected because of her name?? or because his mother phoned up and complained? or is she in a position of power? Regardless, I can not think that any international coach would select for any of these reasons.

Get real.
