England fell agonisingly short of a place in the final of the women's Champions Challenge in Virginia Beach, USA, missing out by one goal despite a 3-0 victory over the previously unbeaten South Africa.
New Zealand advanced to the final - against South Africa - after a 2-1 win over Japan, to leave England facing the Asian side for the bronze medal.
Canterbury defender Mel Clewlow drilled home a 14th-minute penalty corner before Helen Grant scored twice after the break.
She struck in the 44th minute, following in a rebound from her own shot, and 11 minutes later after latching onto a loose ball in the circle.
"We attacked at will, generating more than enough opportunities," said England coach Danny Kerry.
"We wanted to play expansively and go for it and we were just there.
"Tomorrow's game will feature two sides that had a chance to get to the final, but did not. It will be a test of character to see which team responds."
