South Africa booked their place in the final of the Champions Challenge played in Virginia Beach, California, by beating New Zealand 1-0 in a closely contested hockey game.
SA took the lead in the sixth minute after Sharne Wehmeyer forced a New Zealand defender into an unforced error, and Tarryn Bright snapped on to the loose ball to finish clinically.
New Zealand started the second half with great intensity, but determined defence wore them down and SA ended the game dominating the attack.
SA face England in their final pool game today, and Japan meet New Zealand. All three teams are still competing for the
second spot in the final.
"It was a very exciting time for all the players. Their performance was outstanding and I'm really proud of the guts and determination from all the players," said SA coach Jenny King. "They have shown outstanding mental and physical capacity to perform at this level."
