With both the Boys and Girls U-18 squads playing vital matches in their European tournaments in Czech Republic and Lithuania respectively, it was a case of a victory for the Boys and a defeat for the Girls.

Playing in high temperatures the Boys despatched Portugal by 4-0 which leaves them with an excellent chance of competing for the two promotion slots into the Championship division when they resume their games tomorrow (Friday). With the first match to be played against Russia and Switzerland to follow on Saturday, Wales face a tough challenge, particularly against the unbeaten Russians.

Coach Ian Ord said “After the disappointment of the defeat by France the boys played well and are looking forward to giving it their best shot in the remaining matches”.

The Girls were not so fortunate, losing 0-5 to Scotland. As had been shown in their recent friendly matches against the Scots, the opposition were very focussed and clinical in their style of play and it was no surprise that Wales conceded 3 goals before halftime.

Wales showed some grit and determination in the second half but with Scotland prepared to play a waiting game Wales’ failure to convert chances into goals cost them dear with Scotland scoring a further two goals to run out winners 5-0.

Coach Dave Roberts said “At the end of the day we were playing a Championship division team in a Trophy division competition. The next two matches are crucial to keep our national pride.”

The Girls’ final two matches are against Russia on Friday and France on Saturday.
