South Africa booked their place in the final of the Champions Challenge played in Virginia Beach, California, by beating New Zealand 1-0 in a tightly contested game.
South Africa took the lead in the 6th minute after Sharne Wehmeyer forced the New Zealand defender into an unforced error and Tarryn Bright snapped onto the loose ball beating the goalkeeper with a clinical finish. New Zealand started the second half with great intensity but determined defense wore them down and South Africa ended the game dominating the attack.
South Africa face England in their final pool game while Japan meet New Zealand on Friday. All three teams still contesting for the second spot in the final.
"It was a very exciting time for all the players. Their performance was outstanding and I'm really proud of the guts and determination from all the players. They have shown outstanding mental and physical capacity to perform at this level," said Jenny King, South African coach, afterwards. - Sapa
