Irish U18 girls
Well done to the girls over in Poland, imagine how they could be doing if 5 of their best players had been able to go. One due to senior commitments, one due to exam commitments!!!, one having failed to meet the Ulster squad (not sure how that happened), one not having made the Irish team, having played superbly for Omagh in the Schools cup final and lastly due to personal choice, the best goalkeeper at U18 level in Ireland, how far could we have gone if we had been able to select the best in Ireland. Good luck to the girls who are there for the rest of the week.

I agree with Jonty 100% There are players that are on that team that shouldn't be anywhere near being on the Irish team. and was mick mkinnon asleep or wat at the interprovincials? i was at them in waterford and i haf to say he missed out on some class talent and tha t will be the difference between them doing well and not doing well in poland.
Well done to the gils gainst germany today, and well done to capt jules the goal scorer!

Irish U18 Girls
Eight I don't think the coach was asleep but as usual you have to be a certain person or from a certain club as well as being liked, a tall order for most girls, ability dosen't seem to come into it. It seems very unfair at school girl level that these girls are having to put up with such disappointments. They know who should be there and who shouldn't, they're not daft and yes there are always going to be some descrepencies but so many, please!!!! So many girls have been lost to hockey, and some awesome talent, due to what seems to be the unfairness of the selection procedures at this early stage of their career. When are people going to sit up and take notice and ask the questions as to why certain individuals are not in Poland?

I am amazed by many of these comments. Our girls draw with England and Germany (never done before) and all we do is criticise.
This is our best year ever and all the players that haven't been selected can do is slag the coach off behind the screen of forlase names. Grow up and accept that this is the best we have ever done.
Let's get behind our teams for the first time ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Look here i have experienced selections at all levels and i can tell you it's totally corrupt. Yes you are happy that the team you should have been selected for is doing well but at the same time it feels crap when you are sitting on the bench or in the stand when you should be part of this success. I know what its like to scan the pitch before tip off and see the players on the pitch who are there because of their surname, what club they play for or what school they attend/attended. Yes its fair to say that whinging and backstabbing sucks but so does favoritism.

and POLITICS is such a horrible factor in it all, not just in hockey but in every team sport.
and i feel that mick had his squad selected before the interprovincials and that he went to the interpros just to show his face.
I know players who feel they have to change clubs to make them feel they will have a better chance in getting on an irish team.

to all those pathetic people in Ireland ...did it ever occur to you's that prehaps..YOU didnt get picked because YOU have such a high opinion of YOURSELF that YOU couldnt be part of a team no matter how hard YOU tried.... I have watched these young girls play and I have never seen a more dedicated and supporting TEAM. they all get on like best friends, supporting one another and there is no one who has a high opinion of themselves, unlike some hockey players i know. They are winning cuz they are playing as a squad and not as individuals which if certain other girls had been picked would not have happened....so grow up, dry your eyes and stop critising a team you know nothing about!!

I also totally agree with el gringo. Politics is killing hockey in ireland. How many girls/lads quit after school or quit soon after because of the favoritism shown to rivals.
I certainly know that from the mens side of things teams at all grades are selected on reputation not merit. At the end of the day how do you tell two good players apart, the easy way is reputation.

What a load of rubbish, so there is poitics in sport big suprise! players don't give up hockey just because they don't get selected for a provisional squad, they give up because they lose interest or they don't have they required time to dedicate to the sport. The problem with hockey in Ireland at the moment is we are completely caught up with the need for international success and elite aquads that the local club game is being neglected, sure its great that the youths are doing so well but I'd perfer that hockey was resurrected in Connaught and saved in Munster before its too late. Only two mens teams in Connaught and only 24 in Munster, with most relying on kids to keep going or players playing 2 or 3 matches a weekend. This is more worring than some poor darling not getting selected as a sub cause she plays for the wrong club.

concerning that last statement, I know exactlywho you are talking about as she is a close friend of mine and i know for a fact that she was devastated cos she had to pull out - teh treatment she received was uncalled for. i also wish to state that not reaching teh final 18 of the squad is also devastating, people who have not experienced this have no idea how crushing it is and yes i know some of you will say 'it should make you more determined' or 'you obvuously weren't good enough' - but when you have put soo much work in to become what they have asked you to do and then they turn round and tell you they do not want you - that is the most painful thing. my wish is that future coaches do not overlook those that have not made it in the early stages, as this is my greatest fear for it is more likely that those with growing determination to prove their pervious coaches wrong will bethe greatest hockey players that Ireland has ever produced. DO NOT FORGET THEM PLEASE

Some of the utter rubbish above
Mick. congrats to yourself Niall, Dave and Orla on some excellent results in Poland. 4th place in the A division is a fantastic achievement to add to the 6th place in Dublin 2 years ago.
As someone who knows this age group well I am intrigued as to who all the missing stars are that would have helped us improve on 4th.
The squad was essentially picked since before the interpros because the base of this squad was the successful 16s of 2003. The interpros of the last 2 seasons would have allowed anyone not on the radar to make a name for themselves. Most of these girls have been playing together and training on and off for the past 3 years so hence the level of performance and their togetherness as a squad.
It is great to see 4 South East girls and a number of Munster girls on the squad. Looking at the teams on the reports every player has quality in abundance and the future does look bright. Unfortunately Leinster did only have one player of the necessary quality but that will change again.
I hope at least 7/8 of these girls are called into the development squad and that the rest are given the support necessary to make that squad in time if they continue to improve.
Congrats again to all involved you should be hugely proud of what you have achieved.
Only Sorry I couldn't be there.

yah I agree with "ME" whe s/he said that the players who havn't been selected at previous under age levels for Ireland should not be overlooked in future selections.
I feel that at the moment the coaches of the national teams have their core group of players and anyone outside that group have no real chance of being selected. And i feel the people outside this group will have to produce something outstanding on the pitch to catch their attention.
So as I said before, when the coaches are picking their teams they have the entire team practically picked before they even look at what is available to them.
One point I want to make which has nothing to do with this topic is that , why aren't more younger players played in the senior interpros when they are good enough to play on the team?
That is the best way to develop Irish hockey , in my opinion.
Anyway hard luck to the girls who lost to Spain 3-2 today, but well done on the fourth position.

I am not exactly sure how it operates on the ladies side of things but on the mens side it's all reputation. If you dont make u-16's you are omitted from u-18's on reputation. Thus you are subsequently omitted from u-21's and seniors on reputation. Unless you are undeniably the best by a big margin there is no way back in. A lot of this is down to weak coaches who are afraid of the consequences of a bad result following the dropping of a "star player" whether or not that "star" would have made a difference. Dont take it personally but big decisions are beyond most people.

What a shame that a few silly and ill-informed people choose to air their misguided opinions on a 'world web site' where others can see how dis-united and some people 'involved' with Irish hockey actually are ! We must be close to India for making unconstructive comments and having a jibe at others ! It's easy to sit on the sidelines and sling mud ! It is interesting, don't you think, that these contributors on this site wish to remain anonymous ? - how brave !
Being a fellow coach in the province, I know Mick - he's a good coach. He and his players have worked hard and done really well this week, and it's about time people realised what the U18's have achieved - well done girls ! I reckon you're raised more than a few eyebrows at how well you have played - particularly in the German and English camps.

Hockey is a team game and a collection of the 'best' players doesn't always make the best team. Some of those on the sidelines may not have respect for their colleagues or the coach so what hope for them blending into a successful team.
All I can say is that I hope our U18s have as much to complain about when they compete next time round at the A division!

i am disgusted by some of the comments on this site!! look at what an achievement these girls have had this week and all you people can do is run them down and take it all away from them! its a disgrace! you dont see other countries slagging off their teams and criticizing them! And as 'player' said, how many of you were actually out in Poland and watched the squad play? Im sure there werent too many otehr than the players families. Why cant the people of Ireland leave the picking of teams up to the experts, who have clearly made a good selection this year. No-one could have done a better job than the managing and coaching team of Mick, Orla, Dave, Denise and the physio. In my own honest opinion i am so proud of the results preoduced in this years Europeans and am more then delighted with the position that the girls (and boys) finished in. Among the top 4 in Europe!! Isnt that something to make you proud of? YOUR country has drawn and performed greatly with some of the top ranked teams in Europe. And to add to the achievements Jenna Chambers was named GK of the tournament. She fully deserved the award and is a certain role model for younger players, giving high hope for Irish Hockey in the future. Please stop with all the criticizing and lets start showing the encouragement that these young players deserve.
Well done Irish Under 18 Girls for what you have achieved for yourself, your parents, your coaches and most important of all, for IRELAND. You've done us proud.

It seems that the walrus and eight and the others seem to have struck a chord with a large number of contributors to this article. So it seems to go beyond petty backstabbing and whining. While i have to say there is less politics than in the past reputation is still the deciding factor in team selections at all levels from senior to u-16. To truly decide who the best players are you would have to go to a lots of matches every week to see all the contenders enough times to make a proper judgement. And you have to be willing to stake your own reputation as a coach on a lesser known player you felt to be worthy. So logistically the only way to select a panel is reputation and in terms of keeping your job any lesser known player must perform spectacularly well to justify your choice.

Selection poor standard
Selection is never easy and selectors/coaches do not make random decisions for the fun of it. There are always so many things to consider particularly at national and interpro level when selecting for a tournament. Right mix of each line, people who can cover multiple positions, key set piece people with particular skills (flickers, corner push out people defensive corner skills etc.)
When you are picking an international squad there is a pool of quality talent available and you are trying to get the best mix. There will always be disappointed people and I am sure all coaches make a call that is a tossup on occasion and would probably make the opposite choice with the benefit of hindsight.
I do understand where people are upset by poor communication of decisions etc. particularly at this level where kids have exam commitments but from experience coaches do appreciate that they are dealing with kids dreams and aspirations and they are trying to get it right not wrong as their reputation suffers if the team underperforms.
As regards this years selection for both boys and girls the coaches obviously got it very right as top 4 in Europe is exceptional by any standards.
I would like to congratulate both squads and their management teams and fervently hope that this success will be built on.
Looking forward to the Senior Europeans.

when i returned from poland i was both disappointed and saddened to see some of the comments on this site. such negativity despite such an achievement, from both the boys and the girls. firstly, i cannot understand why there is so many comments on politics, only two of the girls on the squad are from the same club, many dont even play for a club! 8 of the girls were from ulster, which is not an over-ruling majority, particulary wen the ulster u18 squad won the inter-pros so convincingly. not one of our girls did not deserve to be there in poland, the commitment and hard work shown by every single girl over the last 6-18months has been tremendous. as for reputation, mel ryan, lauren barr and rebecca dallas all got their first cap. as international hockey players, we r taught to take positive comments along side criticism, however the criticism we learn from is constructive criticism and not destructive which is what many of the comments on this site are. perhaps diferent coaches would have picked different players, but the combined professionalism and experience of mike, dave, orla, denise and niall is how we ended up in 4th position, without their expertise and dedication we would not have been in the medal crossovers. all the trials were professionsal, with every player who attended them given an equal chance to prove thier ability and fitness.. and the best were picked fairly. ill finish by saying how honoured i am at being given the chance to play alongside such talented players, girls we did ourselves and our country proud. the future looks bright for hockey in ireland.

Eight and El Gringo did you ever consider that the reason that you may have been overlooked for such squads is that you look elsewhere for blame all the time rather than at yourself. Maybe with a bit more self reflection you will improve sufficiently to make a future squad.
Here a group of players have exceeded their seeding in Europe and by all accounts dome themselves and US proud. Yet its not good enough for you, you are that concieted that without being there you say they would have been better with you in the team. I dont know you as a player but can guarantee with that attitude you are wrong. T-E-A-M no I.
Well done to the under 18s boys and girls.

Who said i was overlooked for this squad. Who says i even still play. All i am saying is that i have seen a lot of u-18 teams being picked down the years and there is two recurring themes: politics and reputation. I know for a fact that a leinster u-16 team was picked by the selectors looking down a list of candidates for the right surname and they didnt even watch the trail games.

To El gringo
Coaches and asst. coaches spend hours discussing systems, tactics, opposition strengths and which players are best suited to execute the game plan. Suppose if they looked at surnames they'd be going for Bovelander, Kuntz et al. As for watching TRAIL games, mind how you identify your tracks in the wilderness ... explore all options before the train hits you! Chuckle.

Look here froggy. I am simply pointing out the facts of representative selections. And i hope my grammar and spelling meets your approval. I can give you a few more examples. When the late gerry mccabe called up joe brennan ( then not a very well known player ) to the under 21's he was summoned to a branch commitee to explain the selection. When Paddy Gahon was selected for under 18's after performing very well at the trials the coach was called before the branch commitee seeking an explanation as to why someone who didnt play under 16's was called up. So coaches just go on reputation to avoid this hassle.

pile of crap
thats a pile of crap!! i no for certain at least two of those girls on the squad weren't on any irish squad before, and the coaches made a right decision in selecting them! and it was nothing on reputation! And ALL the girls thoroughly deserved their place on the squad in Poland! so give them a break and encourage them and praise them instead of slabbering about selections being wrong!

well obviously all the people who are defending the system are the people who are on these teams and know there are unlucky people out there who should be on these teams instead of them.all the development squads have also been chosen on REPUTATION

of course there are unlucky people thats life! Not everyone can picked for the team. Its been over three weeks since the tournament was over the selections cannot b changed no matter wat slabber is on this site. As far as i am concerned the girls did brillant and everyone of them was selected because of their abilities and how they worked wit the rest of the team , nothing at all to do wit reputation. Well done to everyone on that squad you did Ireland proud !!

in this case i dont think luck comes into it. if you are good enough, and show you are good enough, you will be picked, simple as! any coach who wants to achieve success with any squad knows that if they pick people on reputation, success will not follow. Hence the reason why Ireland under 18s did so well in Poland!
