The Spar South African women's hockey team continued their good form on Sunday in the Champions Challenge Tournament by beating Spain 2-0 in a high tempo encounter.
South Africa led 1-0 at half-time.
The victory means South Africa top the log after the first two rounds and are on course to achieve a place in the medal play-offs at the weekend.
In the 21st minute, Jen Wilson latched onto a Kate Hector hit, deflecting the ball past the stranded Spanish 'keeper in a cleverly worked penalty corner variation. A solid defensive effort wore down the Spanish attack and in the 62nd minute, Pietie Coetzee sealed victory with a well struck penalty corner.
South Africa are the only team to have won both their opening matches and currently stand at the top of the log with six points, two ahead of second placed New Zealand, who they face on Thursday.
First, however, a crunch encounter against Japan looms on Tuesday, and victory in that match would virtually seal a final play-off spot.
Coach Jenny King was happy with the performances so far, but realistic ahead of tougher challengers later in the week.
"I'm delighted with the six points. However the tournament is far from over and we will immediately turn our focus to our next game. Most pleasing has been the consistently good individual performances by all players," said King.
