junior baath
junior baath should have made it for sure.
he is playing very well and needs to take the next step.
since canada has done absolutely nothing in the international stage for the past 4 years, how about bringing some juniors up such as baath and retiring kenny for example? just a thought as i do not want to see canada losing our rising stars.

After watching the team play and train lately this is shocking. And wow to play at the international level these days it seems as though anybody can do it. All I can say to this team is good luck! cause it will be needed, with a whole lot of other things. Now that Argentina won the junior world cup there slowly conquering everything. With the Canadian team looking like this it is impossible to ever qualify. Say bye to the Olympics and hello to the lower rankings and less funding. FHC needs to wake up and see whats happening here.

High Horse...
The National Coach was out at the Senior Nationals but did he ever approach players who aren't carded and asked them about training with the National team.
Just a question...

A Senior Nationals Tournament XI would do well to compete...

Maybe that is what Gene has realised and is trying to build for the future. As for Argentina if they keep beating you remember there is always the qualifying tournaments. Many sides have to qualify via that toute every time since only 5 teams get through in the respective continents, so don't give up on your country quite yet!

i just watched the nat'l championships. although, imho, no player on the bc1 team REALLY stood out from the others, i thought indy was solid and made a bit more of an impression than some others.

is he even in contention for consideration on this team?

re: wolfman
I 100% agree with the wolfman. In the Pan-Am region countries like Argentina and USA are improving their standards and rankings meanwhile Canada is pretty much hopeless after the 2001 olympics. It's a shame because some of these players make sacrifices in their personal lives and yet the results just seem to be getting worse and worse for Canada.

Q-School
Wolfie.....what is the point of Qualifying through the back door if we are just going to barely make it then lose every game in the tournament?
Personally part of me hopes that Sport Can will slash the funding so that we will stop wasting resources on the national teams and get back to business. The fallcy of funding based on national team results will finally be put to rest.
Ther are other NSO who have sucessfully lobbied the ministry to get funding for development while 'shelving' their national programs until their sport is healthy again.

Management and Coaching
WE NEED EUROPEAN COACHES AND MANAGEMENT TO TEACH PEOPLE THE GAME HERE, OUR LOCAL COACHES ARE QUALIFIED, BUT LACK THE KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, AND EXPERTISE FOREIGN COACHES WOULD BRING, FROM COUNTRIES SUCH AS HOLLAND, AUSTRALIA OR GERNMANY.

THESE TYPES OF COACHES WOULD HELP TO IMPLEMENT A NEW PROGRAM AND OUTLOOK FOR THE FUTURE, BUT I THINK MOST IMPORTANTLY IT WOULD HELP OUR PLAYERS WITH THE TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF THE GAME, SUCH AS SKILLS AND GAME SENSE.

YOU CAN SEE IT APPEARING VAGUELY IN WHAT GENE HAS DOEN SINCE HE'S BEEN HERE, HE'S TRYING HIS BEST TO DEVELOP THE TALENT POOL AND GROW IT. SHIAZ WAS A GOOD COACH BUT HE LEFT THE FUTURE BLEEK, BY ONLY COACHING A FAMILY OF PLAYERS.

THE ONLY THING IN QUESTION WOULD BE A WAY OF ENTICING FOREIGN COACHES TO COME TO CANADA.

Tour Umpire
Nobody in their right mind should shell out what FHC wants an umpire to pay to go on this tour. What a mess FHC has made it self out to be, look @ the travel agent they have, I could book a flight to Winnepeg through WestJet and book a hotel on my own for a fraction of the cost that FHC books for! Whoever paid their own way to umpire this tour should smack himself in the head and have a shrink check him out...

How does a player attain eligibility to play for two national teams?

WHY? thats the question? start asking before its to late. soon enough mexico will be ahad of us and other south american countries.
fh in canada will be no existent.

Marian played the German u-16 and u-18 teams. He has now decided that he wants to play for Canada. He has never represented Germany's senior side, therefore he can play for Canada.

I saw the last two days of the Mens Senior Nationals. Does anyone know who played right back for BC2. I thought he played quite strong on the right side. Also, he scooped the ball quite well in the game against BC U-19. Who does he play for and maybe he should be given a chance to train with the national team? Also, what ever happened to Gubbar, I didnt see him play. And why isnt he on the national team? Also, has Sean Campbell retired from the national team b/c he wasnt seen at the tourney either?

Complaining
If you guys think Gene is doing such a bad job why don't you go out there a coach and see how you do things. You guys make it seem like the solutions to these issues are so simple. You need to step back and really think about what goes on to put a national program together. If you look at other countries and how well they are doing you also have to look at how much funding they get from the gouvernment and how popular the sport is in that country. We have a very limited number of players in Canada. As for the Ontario issue... it may seem as if ontario is getting shafted, but honestly are they really that much better than the people out here in BC. I have played in many different provinces and the level of play in BC is SO much higher than anywhere I have been and that includes Ontario. I think we should stop complaining and start support the program and push it to get better. There is alot of talent out there and alot of kids who want to get better we need to support them and push them to achieve their goals.
Best of luck to all the Canadian Boys in Germany!!!

... I totally agree with you. The funding for field hockey in Canada is minimal. We can't expect to perform as well when every other country has more funding. Athletes don't have to stress out as much by dealing with school, work, and field hockey. My friend's older brother is on the canadian national team, and he barely sees her. She says he struggles financially because he is so busy. Maybe if we can find ways to promote field hockey and make it more popular, the government will hopefully help out more. But until then, we have to work with what we have.

Indoor (World Games)
Tough day for the Canadians at the World Indoor Games. 18-2 loss to Germany. Both keepers played, each taking a half. 9-1 after the first half, 18-2 by game's end. Tupper had both Canadian goals.

FHC website not updated yet, but it is on the World Games website results page: http://ressourcen.wige-data.de/infosystem/?lang=en&sport_id=56

I suspect (unfortunately) the abuse of these players will begin in earnest (largely by people whom aren't themnselves willing to make a similar sacrafice that these athletes have made), but I think at this point the value is in them being there and gaining the invaluable experience of playing at a top level, be it a "2nd" team or not.

re: Canadian Club Team
No bagging on the indoor players from me. The teams they played against are top notch. I'd love to hear how they games went - the scores don't interest me that much.

I am disappointed to see John DeSouza playing - even starting. He selected the team and was to be the coach. This is supposedly "Team Canada." It's not right to have him select a team that he is now playing for. This isn't a GOA trip - be a coach OR a player.

re: Indoor's Comments
Too true. It's a bit embarassing for a coach to come off the bench. You'd accept it in a 4th Division, non-league, semi-professional soccer game in the UK or, maybe, some ex-NHLer coming off the bench in the Allan Cup... but this is meant to be a national team, representing our country at an international tournament.

It seriously compromises the legitimacy of the team (the optics are terrible!) and takes playing time away from developing a player for the future. The decision to play a coach is entirely problematic and FHC ought to comment, especially if their resources went into that team...

Or, are 'Indoor' and I being too harsh?

Nevertheless, I'll look forward to speaking with the player I know to see their prespective on what was learned about the indoor game and how they enjoyed the experience!

What.........Did I hear that correctly that John Dezousa played....was he not the coach? Another great example of Canadian Hockey....How can he coach and play at the same time..No wonder Canada got thrashed badly....Did he pay for his tickets or did FHC...Can an Audit be done?.....Very disappointed again.
