It's a done deal for the Stag Malvern men!
The experienced stickmen, piloted by the Marcano brothers, are the new 2005 Toyota Trinidad and Tobago Hockey Board (T&THB) League champions.
The Malvern men clinched the title with 19 points, with Defence Force just one point behind.
Nevertheless, as close as the win may be, the Malvern men have a lot to celebrate as they ended their hard-fought, unpredictable 2005 campaign on a winning note.
In a matter of two weeks, the final curtain will be drawn on the women's segment of the hockey league when Magnolias, 2004 League champs, meet Malvern in the last Championship Division women's clash for the season.
Once victorious in that clash, the mighty Magnolias contingent will retain their title, edging Defence Force by three points.
However, as unpredictable as the league has proven to be so far, the Malvern women may make a desperate attempt to end their 2005 campaign with a win and open the way for an Army surge to the crown.
As to which teams will be showcased in the prestigious Big Four Tournament scheduled for the last week in July, Magnolias, Defence Force and Malvern are the sure contenders in the Women's Division. Whether the fit Paradise squad or the sturdy Raiders women will occupy the last spot in the battle of the big guns, only time will tell as the Paradise women still have to face Checkers in their final Championship Division encounter.
If Paradise pull off a win against Checkers, then they will most definitely be in the Big Four. However, should the "Tobago grass queens" succumb to a defeat of more than three goals against, Raiders will be included in the line-up for the prestigious tourney.
At the other end of the spectrum, a Checkers loss to Paradise could lead to relegation of the Checkers women to the Trinity Division for the 2006 T&THB League as they would occupy the last position on the standings.
The men's segment of the Big Four Tournament promises even more intrigue as the turf transforms into an arena for stiff combat between Defence Force, Malvern, and Queens Park.
The outcome of a Championship Division meet between Paragon and Fatima will decide the fourth competitor for the season-ending contest.
A win for Paragon would earn them a place in the Big Four, while a defeat ensures a spot for the Petrotrin "Oil men".
The Championship Division men's team more than likely to face relegation to the Trinity Division is Paradise as they would be last in the standings this season.
