Hockey has been retained on the programme for the 2012 London Olympic Games after a vote by International Olympic Committee members in Singapore today.

The 117th IOC Session voted to include 26 of the 28 current Olympic sports on the programme, with baseball and softball excluded for 2012. These two sports will remain an Olympic Sport however and are eligible for inclusion in the programme of the 2016 Games.

These two sports failed to win a majority of votes by IOC members and have become the first sports to be dropped from the Olympic Programme since polo in 1936.

While hockey was confident of retaining its position on the Olympic Programme after the release of the IOC Programme Commission report, today’s vote comes on top of a number of positive announcements made by FIH in the past few months.

These announcements include the signing of two major television broadcast deals and the launch of a new four-weekly television magazine programme, BDO WorldHockey Monthly.

Today’s decision means that hockey will participate for the 19th consecutive Olympic Games in 2012 and 21st overall. Hockey was also played on the two previous occasions that London has hosted the Olympic Games in 1908 and 1948, with Great Britain and India respectively claiming the gold medals.

The IOC Executive Board will meet later today to decide whether any of the five candidate sports (roller sports, squash, golf, karate or rugby 7s) should be put forward to the IOC Session for a vote on whether they should be added to the list of Olympic sports.

And most of the cricket games are fixed.kids shouldnt learn from it and cricket is run but stupid rich people who have no idea about sports.Soccer, rugby, basketball and etc... are better than cricket anytime..the only reason cricket is getting popular is the gambling side.you hardly need fitness in cricket just played by lazy people.

Not sure why cricket is being mentioned it has not even been put forward for consideration but to me it is only marginally less boring than base-ball.

Of those that have been suggested, rugby 7's would seem to have the following and spectator appeal to be a success. Squash has huge participation and would be easy to present on television and any facilities constructed would be well used after the event.

The prospect of watching the top professional golfers winning Olympic medals has little appeal and if they did not take part then we would not be watching the best players in the world - on the other hand participation in the sport is massive - in the wealthier countries. I feel something of the same about tennis and football, which are already included. Allowing professional participation has taken some of the lustre off but, on the other hand, to compete at world level in any sport these days requires professional levels of time commitment.

On the subject of the cross-over between professional and amateur; professional boxing is nothing like the amateur game and I do not see professional boxers being allowed to take part in the Olympics but in view of the medical evidence of possible brain damage I am ambivalent about boxing as a sport at all. It would cause uproar to have boxing removed as an Olympic sport, but it is something that may have to be considered in the future - perhaps that is the appeal of the possibility of karate.

Karate' is highly technical and little understood by people other than those involved in it. I am not sure of its popular appeal, as the sport is as different from the 'Hollywood' version as a bar-fight in a film is to boxing.

Roller sports?? Is that one event or a number of similar events, like track athletics or does it include roller hockey, roller dance etc.? Too similar to the ice-skate version for me and could require too many special facilities to be constructed.

So for me Rugby 7's, even though I do not follow or understand the full game, and squash.

i am talking about the popularity of cricket.hockey does not even have a good tv coverage .hardly how many people go to see hockey stadiums are empty or hardly there will be some people to watch eg champions trophy matches played in holland2003,pakistan 2004. .only matches of india and pakisthan are full.junoir world cup hockey as free entry .no tv coverage only last few matches in india. on other hand cricket junor world cup went full house in dacca ,bagladesh with live coverage worldwide.hockey may be second most played game but not in popularity.and talking about fitness every sports require fitness including cricket.fixing scandals are not alone in cricket but can happen in any popular sports.in hockey it may take lightyears.

cricket=joke
the only reason cricket is popular and everyone plays it is because barely any skill is required....u hit a ball, throw a ball, and catch a ball, and do some running.....nothing compared to the skill needed for hockey such as recieving, stick skills, passing, shooting, stamina, speed, vision, perception of the game and many more skills

mr.someone are you allright do you think cricket is so easy!.I think you people hardly known about cricket. Is your country playing cricket if yes then you will not talk like this if no then start playing because as you say no skill is required hit a ball throw a ball blah blah blah.show your country to the world in cricket it is not easy man.after all cricket is a gentlemens game not like your hockey where more then players umpire play crucial role in a match. do you known something all cricket playing nation play hockey and are very strong teams in world hockey and I'am proud of it. remember one thing combination of stick &ball can be only achived by cricket playing nations.

Number of countries that participate in Olympics = over 75
Number of countries that watch Olympics = over 200
Number of countries that play hockey = over 115
Number of countries that play cricket = maybe 15

CRICKET IS NOT AN OLYMPIC SPORT END OF STORY!!!

Why compare with Cricket?
I think this time ring the bell of FIH, if hockey is so famous then why the Olympic committee need to vote. After fieldhockey turns to astro, the game became no skills, now team work, easy to play, you don't have to really hit hard and most important...FIH didn't promote the sports in such a way that it was before. Look, how many countries in Asia play hockey in Asia Games....Korea, Japan, Pakistan and India always on their scoring sheet against lower team. Thailand after their hosting of 1998 (7) Bangkok Asian Games, they never participate any hockey event. Sri Lanka and Indonesia...do they still have hockey? Brunei..anyone there knows how to hold a stick?
Don't really want to talk too much here and I hope FIH or AHF need to do something in Asia before complaining to television coverage more cricket then hockey.
If we keep on compare cricket and hockey, then one day we will witness in the olympic that someone holding beer, smokes as well while playing lawn bowls.

To my "dear" friend Cricket vs Hockey

all cricket playing nations play hockey.. i agree.... BUT not all hockey playing nations are famous for cricket.. one would only have to refer to hockey powerhouses such as spain, germany n holland... and u talk so much abt cricket having so much tv coverage in places like india n pakistan when their national sport is infact HOCKEY!

and if more ppl play hockey globally as compared to cricket, then only common sense would suggest it is more popular world wide irregardless of wad is shown on tv n wads not...

There seems to be a lot of confused people presenting a lot of disjointed arguments here! As I understand it, the IOC voted on the future of ALL the sports at the olympics, not just hockey, making any arguments on the need for the IOC to vote irrelavent.
Despite not playing cricket myself, I find the suggestion that it is a ridiculously simple sport to play, [Quote: "barely any skill is required....u hit a ball, throw a ball, and catch a ball, and do some running....."] rather strange, almost all sports can be over simplified down to similar fundamentals (Soccer= 'kick a ball into a goal, stop other team kicking ball into your goal', Hockey = 'same except replace kick with hit', golf='hit a ball into a hole') but to do so does a great disservice to that sport.

As for hockey being stripped of all skill with the introduction of astroturf... what are you on about. Hockey is now an even more skillful game because the predictable nature of the turf allows players to develop their ball control. This may make the basics of the game easier to pick up, but similarly the skills of the top players will also have greatly increased.

good to see hockey is retained in olympics.real hockey can be only seen in olympics.comparision of cricket and hockey should not be done.they are two diferent sports.
unnessary arguements should not be made about cricket or hockey.hockey is our national game but cricket is more popular in india or in pakisthan.reason may be diferent . but one thing it is sure to be lack of astroturf.where modern hockey is played today. which are very expensive. in countries like india hockey is played on grass or mostly on muddy surface here.countries like spain, germany or holland are lucky because they have plenty of astroturfs.in future there will be no doubt that more european countries will dominate in this sport .but even with such bad facilities in india and pakisthan are in top ten countries of the world.this has to be seen till when. hockey is played in many countries but how many astroturf they have to play the modern hockey.how can fih help in this regard.what is the solution.will hockey could be retain in future in olympics.this time fih was happy to see four direrent nation from diferent continent made into semifinals.but will it be same in future.

great that the olympics stil has hockey!!! bring in rugby sevens instead of tennis - players dont take it seriously enough! get rid of rhythmic gymnastics and synchronised swimming, twenty20 cricket would be a good one to have!
