ROTTERDAM, July 5 (Bernama) -- Malaysia scored their first win in the second round of the Eighth Junior World Cup Hockey when they defeated Belgium 4-2 in Pool F at the Rotterdam Hockey Club Tuesday.
Hitman Zulkiffli Rejab scored his second hattrick of the tournament and opened accounts as early as the 11th minute from the semi-circle set-piece.
Exactly 11 minutes later, Malaysia struck again but this time it was Kevinder Singh who connected a pass from Megat Azrafiq Megat Termizi.
But just before the first half break, Belgium reduced the deficit when Jerome Truyens deflected in a high ball that beat keeper Kairul Nizam Ibrahim.
Back after the break, Belgium drew level with Malaysia when Maurice Dewever struck off a goalmouth melee in the 46th minute.
Despite playing under pressure, the men in yellow took the lead again through Zulkiffli in the 57th minute and he went on to add another three minutes later to seal the game for Malaysia.
"I have more confidence with my flicks now. The balls are going in nicely, and I am happy that I can help the team win the matches," said Zulkiffli.
Malaysian coach Sarjit Singh said Zulkiffli is one of the best penalty corner takers in the tournament.
"I think he is the best flicker in the tournament. We get a penalty corner, Zul (Zulkiffli) will flick it in. What more can I ask from him.
"But we are still lacking in the field goal aspects. My forwards are still lacking the killer instincts," he said.
Sarjit said Malaysia will be going all out to win Wednesday's match against Pakistan to qualify for the fifth to eighth placing play-off.
Meanwhile, hot favourites Australia were the first to enter the semifinals from Pool F as they thrashed Germany 7-1 while Argentina drew 1-1 with Pakistan.
